Will I notice any difference going with 64 bit vista? If so, why? If not, 32 bit is fine? Ultimate or Home Prem?

Doubtful
Minimal / negligible performance gains, but good for future proofing so go for it.
32 bit would be fine, but future proof it imo.
Premium, unless you like spending lots of money for trivial things.

64Bit is only ideal for folks that use 4GB of ram. Which edition of Vista truly depends on your needs, although i would recommend Home Premium as Ultimate is kinda a waste of money for the features it offers.
I'll be upgrading to 4GB RAM AFTER my 2x(next gen ATI card) CF and Q6600... so, may as well go 64-bit, I just don't like the lack of support...
64bit would actually be better but for now 32bit is good for a while

64Bit Vista driver support is actually rather good, it's not like the diabolical situation that folk had with XP 64Bit. Besides i hear that Crysis and Alan Wake are optimised for 64Bit enviroments so it's a ++ either way.
I'm DEFINITELY getting 64 bit Vista. My CPU will run in 64 bit (when apps utilize it), and I won't run into the limit on memory allocation.
Ask PaulDovi or CyberDruid; they are runnign Ultimate x64. I know that Paul didn't have any issues.

I heard that as well.
I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about. I used 32bit Vista and then I used 64bit. If you think there is no noticeable difference you are definitely blind. I could not believe the difference.
I just got Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit today. I don't have any problems with it.
don't do 64bit , it won't allow unsigned drivers to be installed.

Hmm strange, I installed 2 of them today o_O

pwned?

Well its supposed to be only signed drivers, the reason the full-hd feature was cut from 32bit edition was because companies didn't like unsigned drivers allowed on it. *shrug* if it works awesome.

Hmm. Weird. Maybe a recent update allowed it? Strangeee!

64bit OS is proven to give great results in industrial level applications. That't the reason I have used it for the Last 12months in XP64 form the difference for complex calculations in engineering apps can be 2-6 fold beleive it or not. I either duel boot or had a seperate mahine as I love games and never had the drivers for xp64. I love vista and my vista64 is sat here waiting for the hardware/new build.. So hopefully soon to have a single boot single OS for all my uses.. Crazy that I had a duel boot back in the days of win95 and NT4 also.
You guys running x64 Vista Ultimate: did you get the retail version, system builder, or the upgrade? I don't want to spend $400, but I guess I'm going to have to. I don't want to have to buy a new OS every time I get a new mobo........

Get full retail, it so worth it in the long run, and vista will be around for a long while before MS even thinks about a new OS.

My thoughts as well. Just wondering. I have a buddy at work that had to install windows 2K and upgrade from there (he has an illegal copy of XP)
I don't want to have to do that for sure....
Where did you buy yours from? They are so expensive everywhere......
honestly I may end up getting my 2900XT (or XTX when it arrives) by then...but I may get Vista first.
$339 at newegg...ouch
It's going to be worth it though, considering that I use my PC for everything. I have it conencted in my living room as an HTPC. I have a 37 HDTV as a monitor.
How is the media center, etc.?
I just installed Vista Business X64 yesterday and I must say I love it! The installation was much easier then XP's installation. I find that most of my old 32 bit programs work quite well on it. See Vista (atleast the version I have) has two Program File's folders one regular and one for X86 programs.
Here

That includes most information on the differences that i could actually find.

Easty is actually the only one that has given you the most correct answer so far. 64Bit has only shown performance gains in industrial applications. For the simple fact it is optimized for 64bit programmes (which are made specifically, rather than for general things like games that have to be coded 32 and 64bit)

Clayton, i want to see proof that you have seen a performance gain whilst using 64bit. Because as it stands, every single source on the internet says the exact opposite.

There is no reason to go 64bit as of yet, because there are not a lot of 64bit apps that you would use. However driver support is getting increasingly stronger and it will benefit you in the future. So i recommend 64bit anyways

It may not have an advantage over 32bit as of yet, but it doesn't have any negatives either. (please don't say driver support)

Ive been running 64 home premium for a couple of weeks now and the only issue that I have had to speak of is dealing with creative and my xfi sound card. I resolved that issue and it wasnt vista's fault but creatives for crappy drivers.

64 bit was a snap for install and setup and I ahve used unsigned drivers without any issues. So far I like it better then XP. Benchmarks took a hit in some areas but over all it is a far better OS and I cant really complain that much considering it is still a relatively new OS.
