i just booted my pc up this morning to find the black background.

isnt that supposed to happen to pirated copies of vista?
i have a perfectly legaly purchased vista ultimate.
i wont be able to check this until later tonight so post all of your suggestions to get rid of it.

Is your Desktop folder on a different drive than your OS? If so, the drive with the Desktop directory is not being read by OS.

Try pressing "windows key" + d. when my desktop has issues appearing, or what ever I press that and it re-brings up the desktop.

If you have a pirated copy and are "found" it will tell you that you have a pirated copy, and the next time you restart you will be locked out and have to either buy a copy from MS, or enter a valid key.
