I have sucessfully gotten Vista going on my Opty 146 rig. I am typing from it now. Overall it works well. Need a lot of RAM though. I can't get it to see my RAID 0 Array however and that annoys me. It is a DFI Infinity nf4 SLI mobo and I can't find the driver for RAID. Probably am just not looking hard enough, but any help will be appreciated (and rewarded). Also, if you have Vista yourself, please post your opinion as well. I am interested in seeing what everyone's feeling towards this OS are. I think it "feels" great. The overall performance is good and it runs smoothly. Also, folding is no problem either. Everything, so far, has worked. Things like AIM, folding, IE, etc, all work well.

I've been trying to get it to install on a seperate partition of my raid array without success. It says it cannot verify a system drive. I may just upgrade my current system drive to vista - although I'm unsure of the price that I will have to pay to get the full version.

Has anyone had any issues with running NERO (Ahead ) software?
The windows vista upgrade advisor said that it would not run right with vista.

Nero won't work. I've got a fresh install of Vista on my RAID0 drives. Build 5600 (RC1) will not fresh install on RAID of any type. 5748 was a challenge, but I realized that it had built-in RAID drivers... Download the BETA Vista drivers from nVidia, and do not install the RAID drivers. Only install the SATA controller drivers. Vista itself will recognize the RAID array, but won't install correctly without the SATA drivers. If you try to install nVidia's RAID drivers, your RAID array will disappear (at least as far as Vista is concerned).

Edit: Read Post #15 by Renegade5399 to install Vista RC1 Build 5600 on a RAID array.

I can run Nero just fine, I just set the program compatability to XP and it works great. Since I formatted my computer and did my dual boot setup, I have basically been running Vista exclusivley. Haven't really ran into any big problems. Although my x-fi won't work with it, (found out it is tha card iself not vista). But yea I am liking vista alot. Runs great on my system, and seems really stable.

You have to go to the BETA section of nVidia's download page. Here's a direct link to nForce Windows RC1 BETA drivers.
I believe you only need to install the SMBus drivers.

All in all, I like Vista quite a lot. I have to admit that even after they've given Internet Explorer a facelift, I can't help but going back to my favorite browser, Opera.

It's a bit of a ressource hog, and unfortunately Aero has a lot to do with it. (DWM.exe)

Other than that, I also like the start menu and the revamped Windows Explorer, but I can't help but think that it's easier to find stuff when you set the Control Pannel to "Classic View". What's up with not being able to turn Indexing off? I don't think MS needs to force that on us, as there are other options available out there.

It seems that Vista is geared towards the average Joe, and in the process has made some features/tweaking harder to get too.

Finally, the User Account Control is ******ed. I had installed this on my parents PC for one week and they went nuts wondering if they were doing something wrong when they opened a program.... and from a productivity standpoint it just slows you down....

All in all, it's okay, but some of the security and convience "features" should have the option of easily being turned off.

Regards,

Jimmy

but if you have the option of turning them off it doesnt make it secure.

You can turn the User Account Controll off. Go to your Controll Panel, then User Accounts, and click on "Turn User Account Controll Off." After you do that, go to the Security Center in the Controll Panel, and click on "Change the way Security Center Alerts Me." You can get rid of the annoying red shield symbol when you boot your computer if you simply turn it off. If you've got a good firewall, and a good antivirus you don't need all of this extra stuff anyway.

Ok, got the Vista to see my RAID array. It's best to do the installer launch from within XP by simply inserting the Vista DVD. This allows you to load the RAID drivers you'll need easier. I just followed this guide. Now Vista is screaming along on my RAID 0 array and all is well. Folding is going fine, but I can't get Nero 7 to work. I can't even get it to install. Gives an error about a missing .cab file that it cannot locate. Bummer. Next I will be trying SAV 10 and see how that goes. But first, I'm going to load Norton Ghost 10 and see how that works for backups.

I've been loving Vista so far, I enjoyed build 5600 with the only drawback being no 64bit compatible Creative Audigy 2 drivers (driver signature checks and all) but with build 5744 I went with 32 bit and now my last problem (no sound) is resolved and I couldn't be happier with Vista, as I've said before I wish it would be a LOT lighter on my resources but my computer is more than powerful enough to muscle through it, I love the feel of the OS a lot more than XP, it looks the same since my XP is skinned exactly like Vista but in actual Vista the windows fade in and out and everything is animated very smoothly due to being DirectX 9 and being hardware accelerated and all.

The only reason I'm still using XP is I am seeding torrents and I'm not sure if they will be corrupted if I reboot and try to run uTorrent from under Vista so I'm not bothering with it.

I have been experiencing more problems than some in installing all my drivers for hardware. After I finally got it to install in the first place. I have trouble with NERO and my zboard drivers. I have yet to install any games. Also the start menu seems to have a long delay when opening the program folders and after that it flies. I like it but still not comfortable enough with it to use it full time.

OK, I can't get Nero to work and none of the Steam games except Defcon will play. They just get to the point of loading and hang (Source and 1.6). Anyone here using RC2? Are those issues still there? I am using RC1 currently and am thinking of upgrading to RC2. Will my RC1 key work with RC2?

I don't think there is an RC2... But there is a build, 5744 I believe. I've got 5728 installed on my main rig and it plays HL2 flawlessly. Don't have any trouble with Steam. The only thing that I couldn't get to work was Nero, and I heard that will be fixed with the 5744 build. I couldn't get 5728 to successfully upgrade to 5744, however. I could have a bad copy, however, since I had to download it via bittorrent. I'm trying a fresh install of 5744 on one of my folding rigs. If that works I'll fresh install on my main rig.

Edit: I guess the new build is considered RC2. I have it successfully installed in my folding rig and at the bottom-right corner it says Windows Vista RC2.
