Vista: "Ultimate" vs. "Home Premium" ??

1689 Views 21 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Slink
Hey, all.

If I bought Vista, I'd get 64-bit ed. But is it worth getting "Vista Ultimate"? Seems like a rip-off!

I think I would do just fine with "Home Premium", don't you all? Or should I stick with W7 for DX10 games and wait for a price drop? (Naive, I know.)

Thanks!

Ehh buying Vista right now is not really a great idea considering Windows 7 is going to be here shortly. If there is a way of doing some sort of upgrade program than go for it. Otherwise XP should do you fine.
Thank you. That is also my take on the situation. Beside that, W7 beta does pretty well for now, and it's free atm, ya? (I has it.) ;-P
If you're looking to get a new OS now, get Vista Home Premium x64. Vista Ultimate really isn't worth the extra cost.

Or you could just wait for Windows7. But, in the interim Vista is pretty sweet - I like it a lot better than XP.
The best thing about ultimate is that it can do a complete PC backup. So after I install the OS and all my software, I can make a backup on a partition or a external HDD. Now if my OC crashes and trashes the OS, I dont have to reload, I just pop in the install DVD and select the Repair option. Then I resore from backup and in 10 min I am up and running again.

This basically

You only need home premium x64, ultimate is a complete rip off with no perks over HomePrem.

I disagree, see previous post. I once thought as you did when I was running Home Premium. But after getting Ultimate from the Windows Experience, I wouldn't go back to Home Premium.

i have home premium and its fine for me. however if u r getting like a combo deal where ultimate would be like $50 OFF (like in that link u posted in a different thread) then its worth it. I wouldnt pay too much extra for it though, its more incryption features, more free games, and u can set videos as wallpapers. There are always restore points u can set, then when u pop in your disc u can load from restore point, in home premium. Yeah ultimate is nice, just not worth it imho.

If you're a student, get Ultimate for $64.95: http://www.theultimatesteal.com/
Hmm, nice post, but that seems to be for an "upgrade". :-/
Windows 7 will mostlikely be released in 2-3 years...

Windows Home Premium is fine, and you will probably never use the features in Ultimate anyways. Only reason why I run Ultimate is because I got it from "Specific Sites".

If you have XP, you should be able to use it. You don't even need to have XP installed, as far as I've seen, you can just insert the disc when it asks for it.

Since you already have XP...

You can install the upgrade as a full install. Just install it without entering in the product code and it will be installed as a trial. Then install a second time with the install code and do a fresh install.

W7 will be out either the end of this year or q1 of 2010. M$ is pushing for a release @ the end of this year.

Also, this probably doesnt pertain to the matter but vista ult. can also join domains but i know you probably dont have a domain at home, or at least i dont see y u would.

Also, here is the differences straight from M$ themselves.
