Vista Ultimate x64 stored in RAM?

395 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Dotard
I've read a whole lot about Windows Vista being stored in ram once a user gets to the 8GB mark, but I was wondering, is there any way to force Vista into the RAM when there is less than those 8GB, say 4GB?
The RAM usage of Vista is about 700MB when there is 4GB installed (I read on a review).. I also read that the ram usage is about 1GB when you put in 8GB... So, how could be able to set it to use 1GB out of my 4 to store vista, the difference is only like 300MB between having 4GB and 8GB.

I would not like to have to put 1GB aside, but rather, have it just use what it needs...

Disable superfetch if you don't want it fetching your RAM. Then you'll have a whole lot more free.

It does not use 1GB of RAM, it borrows 1GB of un-used RAM and if anything ever needs more, it will scale back to <300MB.

Never disable it, bad idea period.

On a similar topic, how would one go about "forcing" vista to load applications into the memory. I know it already somewhat does this, but I haven't seen it ever go over 1.7 gigs used. I want my 4 gigs to be used!
@ Halifax1
I actually want it to load itself into memory so that I wont have to listen to my HDD spin up every few minutes...

I'll see how it performs with 4GB, since I'm on 2GB right now till I do my new Build Tonight..

Go into "my computer" and right click on your drive, select "properties" and down at the bottom uncheck "index drive for faster searching". It leads to a good deal of HDD thrashing.

Also under "defragment" on the "tools" tab, set it to run at 5:00AM or something.

Sorry to be rather off topic, but would disabling superfetch possibly make the stuttering in a few games go away?

I doubt it, afaik it won't be doing work or using much ram if your playing games.
