Vista x64 BSOD - Help plz!

Hey all,

So i recently did a fresh install. Everything seemed fine for a while, but i am getting these weird BSOD's and application crashes (TF2, CS:S).

I ran OCCT stress tests for 6+ hours without issue. Last night, I put the OCCT into an infinite loop around 10pm and it seems a though my PC BSODed around 5:45am...so 7.5hours into the stress testing.

My temps are fine...i tried putting my CPU and GPU clocks back to stock, removed my Soundblaster X-FI and went with on-board sound...it still happened...

All very confusing and I am at a complete loss....here are some details bellow.

MSG Upon Reboot:
Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name:BlueScreen
OS Version:6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID:1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode:3b
BCP1:00000000C0000005
BCP2:FFFFF80001ED76FA
BCP3:FFFFFA600352C990
BCP4:0000000000000000
OS Version:6_0_6001
Service Pack:1_0
Product:256_1

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\\Windows\\Minidump\\Mini031009-03.dmp
C:\\Users\\Andrew\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\WER-42690250-0.sysdata.xml
C:\\Users\\Andrew\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\WER9DC8.t mp.version.txt

I went digging in the Event Viewer and found more stuff:
Event ID: 10
Source: WMI

General: Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Microsoft gives this link under: "Event Log Online Help" - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc727148.aspx

A ton of people seem to be experiencing similar issues, BUT all have different hardware...some Nvidia based, some Intel, Some Intel CPUs, others AMD....graphics are also both ATI and Nvidia.

EDIT: Found the error log for the HL2 (TF2 & CS:S) crashes:
Log Name: Application
Source: Application Error
Event ID: 1000

General: Faulting application hl2.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x470c11ae, faulting module filesystem_steam.dll_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x49b02ada, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x022a72c9, process id 0xd54, application start time 0x01c9a1242f233c28.

My money is that this is going to be a ram issue. I have the same board on another computer. I was using corsair memory and it ran like crap. I bought some gskill ram and replaced my 2gb with a 4gb kit... still ran like crap. I tried voltage settings timings settings to no avail.

Finally after trying everything (including testing each stick separately) I threw in both kits. It gave me a total of 6gigs and it finally ran stable. Recently I had to rebuild on the same board and I had the same story. Right now I'm running the same corsair 2gig kit with a pair of cheapo 1gh kit of kingston. Total is 3gigs right now.

To make a long story short. I had to fill all the dimms on this board in order to get it stable.

edit: BTW the first time I did it I was still able to run in dual channel mode. However, this time around I had to settle for a single channel configuration.

I have suspected my ram in the past....BUT i ran Memtest x86 for over 12 hours...about 2 weeks ago...and it didnt error once. Should I still test the sticks anyway?

I actually have other RAM lying around...that I can probably try....the problem is these damn error come at random...and sometimes ill use the pc and play TF2 and CS:S for 2-3 days without crashes...then I will get 3 crashes in 1 hour or 2 BSODs in a day....very inconsistent..

Yes test the sticks and also run a hard drive health test. You never know what can come up.

wow that is BRUTAL!...i just rebuilt this rig....replaced all stock heatpipes with the Thermalright HR-05s and got the TRUE on the CPU...all temps under 60C on NB/SB, etc....CPU running @ 3.9Ghz (44C MAX) with 7hours + OCCT stable....Prime 95 8+hours stable....but these damn BSODs and app crashes are making me wonder....worst part is they happen even if i put everything to stock.

I think im having same issue with same OS. Mine only crashes when watching movie or sometimes just chatting on xfire. I did get new ram so I will see how it goes from here. Hope this gets worked out and same as you i am stable only at stock now and have some new hardware and am stable playing games and other things.

hope the ram helps m8....i am getting increasingly frustrated with this crap though...so much work into the rebuild and cabling and re-install...etc...to end up with this crap lol

can someone confirm that RAM can still be bad and cause these types or similar error/crashes/issues even if it passes Memtest86 after 12+hours???

I have had back ram kits a few times before, but all of them were caught by Memtest86....

lol no kidding...on stock cooling my NB was 87C @ Load on stock settings.

EDIT: Currently NB: 56C SB: 47C @ IDLE......NB: ~61C SB: ~52C @ LOAD

Yes this is true most of time if it passes windows stress test like prime95 blend it is stable for overclocking at least.

hmm...so is the general consensus that:

Bad ram CAN pass memtest86 ???

On another note....Any other places I can find error logs around Vista x64??

Run the ibt and see if it can handle that. If it can't then you know there is something wrong with your hardware. (ram/cpu)

Is the ITB (IntelBurnTest) the same as running the Linpack Test in OCCT?

I set my pc to run Prime95 blend-test last night, but forgot to check this morning before going to work. Will try this ITB or OCCT Linpack test when I get home tonight.

My other issue is....what if my PC BSODs in the middle of one of these tests? How do I know that the test caused the BSOD and not some software glitch that happened to trigger during the test?
