Hello,

i've never messed with hard drives or partitions or anything and dont really plan to get into that much.

pretty much the question is how can i put a 40gig seagate sata hard drive to use that i got for free.

right now the only hard drive i have is a 120 gig ide with xp and everything on it, how could i use this seagate to benefit me at all?

Just turn off the computer and plug it in. Then it should show up, right click and format all the junk off of that hard drive and thats it.
Yeah, plug it into the motherboard and make sure you plug a power cable into it too. It should be pretty much plug and go.
I'm assuming it's IDE. So take the ribbon-like cable and plug in one of it's connections to the HDD. Take the power connector (it's obvious which one by looking at it) and plug it in. Make sure you secured the drive in the drive bay (in the case) before you connect these connections. Then start up the PC, go into windows, and it should be recognized. If so, just format it and get set to go!

if it doesn't recognize it, then pop in the windows XP CD you have, and create a partition on the unallocated space. Then go into windows again and format it.

If it's SATA you'll be using small little red cables instead of the big ribbon-like cable.

Go ahead and read the rules and correct your title while you're at it.

And yes, all you need to do is imply connect the drive to the motherboard, just as you would a CD-Rom drive. Format it in Windows and it's good to go.
