Want to overclock, questions inside!

First of all, here are my system specs:
------------------------------------------------------------
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
System Manufacturer: K8T890
System Model: AWRDACPI
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.0GHz
Memory: 1534MB RAM
Page File: 553MB used, 2366MB available
Windows Dir: C:\\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode
Graphics card: ATI Radeon X800 GT (Omega 3.8.442)
------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I want to squeeze as much out of this thing as I can. While idle or playing Fallout 3, just as an example, both the CPU and VGA are always around 30°C.

I'm thinking I can push this thing a little bit more but I'm a nub when it comes to overclocking..

I have 3 fans in it not counting the 2 from CPU and GCard.

I've heard AMD's are great for overclocking, especially this one but the problem is that I don't know much about overclocking.

I'd like to know what I can overclock whether it be the RAM, GCard or the proccecor to make this run better than it is right now and links would help majorly, obviously ;P

I know there are threads out there but I want answers specifically towards my situation and my questions.

Thanks.

Implode, welcome to OCN! It's always nice to see another eager overclocker.

If you want links then that is something we can definitely provide. Here are two guides that should provide plenty of insight. The first one should explain the basic fundamentals. I'm assuming your 3200+ is a socket 939 so the first link would be the one to check out. The second link will discuss how to find the limits of each component (processor, motherboard and memory). This is also very important to follow. This will let you know what is capable of what speeds ect. The procedure should provide a nice baseline for you:

http://icrontic.com/articles/overclo...54939_platform
http://www.overclock.net/faqs/31782-...pu-memory.html

Another helpful guide with links to TOOLS you'll need:
http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ing-guide.html

Further more if you could add your hardware specifications to your signature that would be very helpful for us. You can do that by going here: http://www.overclock.net/specs.php?do=addsystem

One thing I might add to this...with VIA chipsets, you'll have to watch out when raising the HTT (reference clock speed). On most VIA chipsets the PCI bus is not lockable so when the reference clock speed is increased the PCI clock is also increased. When the PCI clock is increased it'll eventually lead to instability. This instability can be anything from a crashing/freezing computer with BSOD's or data corruption across your operating system (mainly your NTDLR becoming corrupt). So just be aware of that. First thing to look for is a lockable pci bus.

Let us know

Good luck buddy

Thanks for the reply thlnk3r

The very first link you gave however doesn't seem to be working properly. Only the first page works and the rest give a 404 Error. : (
Implode, try the link again in your previous post (#5).

Let me know if that works
Yeah, that works but when I try to go to Next section: Overclocking Theory or any other sections, it gives an error on the page.

The main intro page works fine though.

Implode, ug looks like their website is experiencing some issues. Check out the third guide I posted. That is also extremely helpful.

Good luck

Alright, scratch that.. I was looking at the wrong temp.

My idle CPU is currently 48°C.

Yesterday it went up to 58°C on idle, it was pretty hot in my room.

Is this normal and OCable for an AMD?

Implode, these type of temperatures are possible on the stock cooler. How much Vcore (processor voltage) are you currently running? What kind of airflow do you have in your case?

When you have time, could you please add your system specifications to your signature? That way if you start another thread with a question you won't have to list everything in your first post

Good luck

Currently running 1.42 V

I just have 2 fans at the side of the case. My back fan stopped working a few weeks ago. :/

Implode, is 1.42 volts at stock clocks? I'd advice installing at least one exhaust fan. You probably have some trapped air in your case that is killing your ambients. It's also important to have an intake fan as well. Are you running the stock thermal pad or have you applied different TIM (thermal interface material) on the base of the cooler?

Good luck

Yeah, 1.42 volts is stock

Thermal pad is also stock
I'm wondering what the MB model # is and if this system is a custom build or not.

Good question Duke!

Implode, I'd really recommend replacing that failed exhaust fan and replacing it with a working one. If you can please also install an intake fan. What kind of case do you have? If you start upping the Vcore then you might want to also think about picking up an aftermarket cooler. A idle temp of 48C is a tad high.

Good luck
