Want to start using RAW- Nikon shooter

744 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  christian_piper
Hey guys! So I have a Nikon D60- and I shoot in JPG.. I would love to start using RAW and learning how to process RAW.

What do I have now? Not much. GIMP and UFRAW.
First I need software- preferably that works on Vista 64...
Sadly I am also on a budget

In short: Anybody want to point me in the right direction for learning to PP my images? Thanks!!

All my photos I have been taking are in RAW. I import them into Adobe Lightroom 2.0(64 bit) and edit them there. After that I export them as a jpeg.

All your photo's are in RAW.. I also have a D40, and I don't know what the difference is in RAW pics. A regular shot an be loaded into lightroom also can't it? I just got lightroom 2.0 and I'm liking it. Some great stuff. and I've been watching a few video's on it. Really helpful. you should for sure look into getting it. Would I benifit form shooting in RAW also??

Well, your camera comes with Nikon View NX, which converts RAW images to JPEG and allows for basic adjustments to exposure, white balance, sharpness, etc.

I believe your camera also comes with a trial version of Capture NX, which is a more sophisticated RAW editor and converter. It might be worth purchasing as I heard many Nikon users say that it's as good or better than Adobe Camera RAW.

RAW images are the "raw" pixels taken from the camera sensor. It records data for a wide range of exposure, color, contrast, sharpness, etc., and essentially lets you "retake" a picture. With JPEGs, there is little you can do other than make adjustments to the RGB channels, so you're stuck with whatever exposure, white balance etc. you picked when you shot the picture. However, Nikon cameras have a reputation for producing very good straight from the camera JPEGs, so some shoot in that format only. One downside to RAW is that it is much slower when shooting in burst mode (unless you have $7000 camera).

One other benefit to using RAW is single-image HDR trick. To make a high-dynamic range image ordinarily, you must use exposure bracketing when shooting to take three shots of the same scene at different exposures and combine them with software. With a single RAW image, you can simply adjust the exposure post-shot to each brightness level and simply make three JPEG conversions for making an HDR.

I always shoot RAW only. I like the flexibility of being able to change shot settings and being able to generate HDRs.

Thank you all! I will look into the free software with the camera + Lightroom + Capture NX.

Your help and advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
I have a D40 and I use the Capture NX software. I find its actually quite well made (wasn't expecting that) and gives me lots of control over the RAW images after they've been shot.

Ive been told Lightroom is great as well.
Wow, Thanks for that info. I didn't know what RAW did. thats actually really cool. you can basically change settings to make it like a completely different picture. But tell me this. Do I "Have" to actually open it into a software like Lightroom first before I do anything with it. I woulnd't be able to plug my camera in and rip a image to my PC then email it.. not without loading it to lightroom first.. right? or no?

Also, yes Lightroom is great. I just got LR 2.0 and I'm enjoying it. Does some crazy cool stuff.

You could e-mail it, but the recipient would need to have Nikon software or at least the NEF codec installed to view it. All camera brands have their own version of the RAW image format (Nikon has NEF, Canon has CR2, etc.). So unless you're sending it to another Nikon shooter, a RAW file should be converted to JPEG first.

As others have said, I'd go with Capture NX2. It's really very good indeed. It gives you a lot of control. I have started to use it creatively, as well as for processing RAW images, as it's control points are excellent for both. Being able to selectively apply adjustments makes image editing so much easier. I can do things with CNX2, in minutes, that would take 20x longer in GIMP. CNX2 is fairly expensive, but it really is worth it imo. It makes processing RAW images and getting creative, so easy and fun.

Highly-Annoyed

Actually, I found a good deal on lightroom, so I ended up with that. I like it! A bit "weak" but I have GIMP for detailed work... Lightroom seems prefect for me.

But as I said- GOOD deal. I might have to look at captureNX2 as well....

Here is the first edit I did on lightoom. I might have to add the original file for comparison...
