WARNING!!!! to all AMD users (windows 64x)

please pardon some of my spelling in advance here.
her is my system
a8n-e
venice core 3200 stock cooling
asus 6200
500w psu
2 hdd 40gig 80gig
windows x64 pro
1gig memory dual channel

this is a warning thread for all amd users DO NO USE windows x64bit edition it is a total pile of ****. i have been using for years since service pack one (home) i just recently got new hardware because my mobo burnt up so far heres my complaints take em or leave em this just my finding sofar

ive had this os for about 2weeks after obtaining it 6months ago and was waiting for an upgrade to install this

i will go over my thoughts with this os compared to xp home

i downloaded all the drivers, and updates sofar from microsoft and various hardware distributors such as nvidia

1graphics: home-9
i had an old agp nvidia ti310 and it was never glitchy never glitched ever, not even in the hardest games i could play rome total war with out a singel frame jump

1grapics: x64 pro-6
i play rome total war with my new 256 6200 nvidia and all i have is random frame glitches in any game i play even in some cases my card jumps on low requirement games. also with some games i get the blue screen of death

2Proformance: home-8.5
this was pretty fast for me my processor was starting to die on me and i was overclocking it and it work a little bit over all very fast to my liking with my 3200

2Proformance: x64 pro-6
very fast start up thats the only pro of it but it soon has difficulty running the cpu jumps to 100% at random times i have random freeze times with multipul programs i am constantly restarting.

3features: home-8
basic internet and most programs work fine with windows

3features: x64 pro-6.5
exactly teh same as home just not so many programs are made for x64 so its harder to work around that fact

i gave xp home 25.5/30 since its a very good and well built os system
the x64bit pro edition i give a 18.5/30 it is a very poorly built os and is yet to bloom into what it should be and what my expectations are of it (not very high)

i would not recommend the x64 os to anyon at all stick with home or pro save yourself 80$ and keep the good working os's and yes microsoft isnt paying much attention to this os either because of vista maybe in a few years if it isnt forgotten about by microsoft then it will be fixxed a little better

yeah x64 is not worth it in anyway shape or form in my opinion
It used to not be worth it- now there is driver support for most things. I have used it in the past, and have not had any issue with it. And I did buy it (sorta, came free with my purchase of XP pro)
imho - 64bit windows won't kick-in and be viable until x86_64 cpus are the norm.

well just FYI buddy, uhh, Vista is due in the end of January...

and not to sound like a dick, but Firefox 2.0 has built in spell check.

Check it out at www.getfirefox.com and it transfers all ur crap from IE to FF, so all ur bookmarks, searches, passwords, will be in FF too.

g'day

well i can make some sense of it. really in my option. i reckon wait 4 vista. i have run the beta on my mates 64bit. and it works great. all the games that i have played work perfectly. TVtuner cards etc.. are had to get drivers 4. but that is always the case with a Beta. anyway i wait 4 vista x64 to come out fully. XP x64 was just a quick release. because XP was never suppost to b a x64 operating system. so it is bound to have heaps of bugs. anyway we will c how good the actual thing of vista is in the new year.
We shouldn't flame the guy for stating his opinion! I think he did a nice side by side comparison between home and x64.

I will say though, that I use x64 as my one and only OS, and I like it very much, so there must be doing decent about it

I used x64 then went back to x86 now I am back to x64. I went to x64 due to mainly game load times I have noticed a huge improvement. Sure some of the apps I used on x86 will no longer install but most if not all where apps of no use to me. To each his own I guess.

64 bit windows is actually a VERY good operation system. You just have to not be lazy and look for the correct drivers. Oblivion & Far Cry run MUCH better under X64 than under X86. Stop being lazy and find the correct drivers.

BTW: LOOK! SPELLINZ FTW!

He is correct, windows pro 64 runs wonderful for me, and even more so now on my new proc. Id recommend windows 64 to most AMD users.

I'm still using x64 six months after purchase on the first install. How rare is it that you find something that doesn't suck after six months? Not much of anything, if anything at all. I mean yeah, there's tuning involved, but nothing that makes anybody a total r-tard trying to figure it out.

All the problems you state are driver level problems. Look for 3rd party drivers, they tend to be MUCH better than the normal drivers (Like the XG Warcat drivers for ATI cards, much better than ATIs stock ones)

Drivers drivers drivers!

Cannot stress that enough. Go through you're entire list of hardware, make a list if you must. Check if they're all up to date 64 bit versions. I had the same issue when i tried the first Vista beta on my laptop. I wouldn't expect Microsoft to have all drivers preloaded. It's still new territory. New equipment usually comes with 64 bit drivers. The older stuff you need to update, search, find out if there are 64 bit drivers.

Ask around for tried and true aftermarket 64 bit drivers!

All is not lost. This will just take a little time and patience..
now i and 99% sure taht the 6200 driver isnt right from teh nvidia site i downloaded the 64bit drivers but i highly doubt that they have a good 6200tc 64bit driver so yes i will look around but i do have problems with the random freezing problem still i like running itunes tehn playing a low requitrment game (war rock) and it still freezes my 3200 is jsut working harder tahn normal it seems to do nothing
Guys, I believe diablo has been informed of his shortcomings. Please, continue on with the original focus of the thread.
well i got new drivers for my 64x now and stil glitchy what do u think is wrong now?i got an aftermarket driver to replace the x64 from nvidia and its xtreme-g idk how good those are but its still glitchy what otehr drivers would i need for glitchy ness? driver accelerator ?
