Which company should I consider switching to?

Warning: Western Digital quality has gone down the drain.

I'm writing this today in disbelief...

In the last 4 months I've had 4 WD drives fail ranging from 1year to 2 months old bought from Newegg and Tigerdirect.

500GB WD Blue (bad sector)
500GB WD Green (clicking and unresponsive)
320GB WD Green (bad sector)
and just now a 320GB Blue (spins up and shuts off 2x staying off after)

The latter one was from my mothers system and failed last night! and the others are from mine!

Both systems were in separate houses.

What in the world is going on?
Now i'm extremely hesitant to even use the 500gb WD Blue I just purchased... All drives were under warranty and WD did replace them, but still... This is unacceptible and I'm putting out the warning for others to see.

Has anyone else here had their WD drive fail within the last 2 years unexpectedly?

Seagate here I come.

Funny you mention this, but I actually only had Maxtors and Seagates fail on me so far... the most recent being a seagate drive

I honestly think that hard drives are particular to each individual, like an unseen and unspoken karma. We're all destined to be loyal to either WD or Seagate but not both...

I bought 3 Seagate drives in my life and they all died or are dying. I bought 5 WD and they are all fine except the 6-year-old that's dying (but it's been dying for 18+ months!)

So all I can say is stick with the company with which you had the best experience.

Could there possibly be an error on your part?

Storage method, transport, ect?

HDD's are probably the most fragile part of a system. And they are easy to shock and damage.
That's insane. Are you sure it isn't something in your system?

This may have just been bad luck. WD is still the brand I trust the most.

I know if ur order them from new egg they are destined to be bad.... bc of the way they package
No problems here....10+ drives of my own and 25+ drives for friends/clients, all spinning away just fine.
Thats exactly how I feel, I trust WD more than anything.

As far as damaging the drives, I'm very careful. They usually get shipped here and I put them right in my system, no drops or anything of that nature. Plus the fact that these are two different systems and have been two different OCZ power supplies on my system durring the lifespan of the other drives, I really don't know what to think.

I fear that because of the economy, HDD companies have begun to degrade parts materials and sacrificed drive reliability because of it. I really hope it's not true.

+1 If WD makes you uncomfortable switch to Seagate, Samsung or Hitachi.

This is how I rank the brands in order of which I would trust them.

1. WD
2. Samsung
3. Hitachi
4. Seagate

That order has more to do with the quality of their firmware. Every manufacturer is going to have dead drives. You just have to hope you don't get 4 in a row like you did

I've had 7 seagates fail on me in 4 years, but I still have WD's back from my Pentium 3 Gateway machine. I am running two WD's right now.
Both Blacks.

1 out of 25 hdds wd black caviar 500 / 640 and 1tb have failed, but it was obvious of the get go, i think its an acceptable rate for me personally.
I would put this down to some bad luck. I have used WD alot during my computing lifetime and I have never had a complaint with them..Nor seagate. Maxtors are usually the ones that spring up problems but even with Maxtor I have only had one problematic drive.
OK well you guys are making me feel a little bit better.

That's just the thing. I have some ancient drives about 8+ years old ranging from hitachi, seagate and WD and they are still going strong!

New drives seem less reliable to older ones.. It's a shame.
I've got a 1tb barracuda, 400gb barracuda, and a 640 caviar black. None of which have failed me yet

The poll is biased with WD users.
Well I doubt anyone would vote for a company that was bad. WD has a good reputation because their drives are *usually* great.

I've had one very bad experience with Seagate, I was one of the vitcims of the bad firmware issue, lost all my data (600gb) so I made a big stink, emailed all the execs of Seagate, next day they offered to recover my data for free and send me another drive, so in the end I was pretty happy!

I have a Samsung, Seagate and 3 WD drives.
