with that case, a bay res may be your best option. This is an affordable solution that is successfully used by many.
Danger den builds a really cool Bay res for the D5 if that's the pump you like. XSPC also builds a pretty cool dual bay res for 2 DDC's if you would like to have the redundancy of two pumps. This (the bay res option) would solve a lot of mounting problems you might encounter in that case.

I like distilled and silver. Other stuff may cause problems. DI and Silver= cheap and safe. Use a colored tubing if you want the effect.
Barbs are fine and may even be more secure. Compression fittings are more for looks than better function IMHO. For the cost, XSPC Barbs are cheap and perfectly functional. On the other hand, you can spend a fortune on fittings if you want to!
