Well my 250GB WD Caviar 250GB of 5 years finally died.

What HDD should i replace it w/?

I don't need bleeding edge performance of a velociraptor or anything like that. But, I don't want a low power drive which can be slow to respond.

Something somewhat fast & responsive that will be very reliable.

WD & Seagate have always been my go to brands. A lot of other brands have gotten attention now though like Samsung.

I'm looking at the 500GB-1TB range.

samsung spinpoint f3... guaranteed to get 500gb per platter- cheap as hell too

i think most western digitals and seagates use 320 per platter still
Yeah, but is the Spinpoint as fast as the Caviar Black? The Caviar Black is said to be a very, very fast 7200 RPM hard drive.
WD switched to 500gb platters..you can tell form the model number, I'm not sure how though. I think there is a list somewhere. The RE4 definitely has 500gb platters.

most test it does beat out the caviar black yes... definitely has the best performance overall although the barracuda and caviar do beat it in a few tests.

WD and Seagate are still clearing out stock of 320gb per platter.. do not buy these...

as long as you get a 500gb/platter drive you should be ok though... but i think the samsung is the cheapest 99 percent of the time anyway if you can find one in stock.. newegg has the 500gb only right now the 1tb is oos

yeah you are right... the model numbers are just confusing as **** with them they should call it caviar black 2 or something

the only WD's i can look at and guarantee they are 500gb per platter is the 2tb ones... otherwise you would need to look it up

If anyone could point out this list it'd be appreciated
I would prefer to have a maximum of 2 platters for the drive, to keep heat down.

How is Samsung for reliability? I have read that WDC & Seagate are pretty reliable for their enthusiast drives, even if they have had problems w/ their green drives.

Great, my Samsung Spinpoint F1 RAID0 has always stood up, stayed quiet and been great since day 1.

I say go with the Samsung Spinpoint F3's, seem to be the best drive for the money these days.
