Weird BIOS floppy error...

468 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Schmitty
Randomly my wife was playing a video game on my sig rig. It BSOD's on her, she reboots. When it boots backup she gets a cmos checksum error and a Missing Floppy drive (error 40).

I clear cmos, reboot, this time it boots up to an 7F code on the board which is halt and check error message. Same error as before. So I hit F1 to continue everything works as normal. I go back in to cmos and disable the floppy drive, as I don't have one. Weird thing is, this computer has been running fine for 8 months with no problems, no BIOS changes.

I don't have any overclocks at all, so I don't see what could corrupt my BIOS.

If this is becomes a recurring problem, what are some tips? I've already changed out my ram and disabled SLI, as I've read that this mobo has this problem but no fixes. Maybe flash bios? Thanks!

Try flashing the BIOS. Did you make sure to disable the floppy device?
I cleared it by removing the battery. And as for the floppy, I put NONE. Is that disabling the floppy controller? Or can I go somewhere else and disable it further?

I really want to avoid flashing atm... I have had issues with that in the past.

Thx,
If you dont have a floppy its searching for one hence the error.Could be wrong tho.

None...should be fine. If you set that, it's got to be something else then. I'd call EVGA or send them an email.

Maybe the bios battery is starting to get bad, when a battery goes bad it cannot keep it's settings.

Yeah I would imagine so, but the thing is that its ALWAYS been enabled and I never had one installed for 8 months.

And I had to clear the CMOS for it to even boot. I'm more concerned that its my BIOS that got corrupted somehow.

When you reset cmos that does reset boot order and other stuff id imagine.

I had to reset the cmos to get it to boot AFTER this error. I never had disabled the floppy drive in the first place or even touched the bios since i built the rig.
