Have you opend your computer and tried to see if you could locate the sound that way? Since P3's dont run very hot unplug all the fans and turn it on for a sec. If you have no sound you have found your problem. Now you just have to figure out with fan (if you have multi fans). If its still sounding think hard drive problems

it should be able to handle it for a while, but if you really dont want to, just unplug any other fans, open it up and listen if there is still a noise, and where it is comming from

my girlfriend has a pentium 3 and i have replaced the CPU fan twice since i have had it and also my old pentium three had a bad CPU fan...
its making a noise thats not consistent like a
please dont laugh at this

either a Gerrrrrraaaaaand
or Verrrrrraaaaaaand
sumthing like that several times for like 3 or 4 seconds length and
several seconds in between...

the sound is from the fan catching the side of the fan shroud.....
it will do it untill the armature of the fan motor heats up and then since the copper in the motor has pulled it into better alignment so it runs fine
the noise is disturbing but i dont think there is any, harm sometimes you just need to clean out the motor. but since it is older you have no way of monitering RPMs so it could be running really slow and un efficient.
check in your bios to see what the temps are reading if your lucky maybe it will show RPMs.....

REP me if this helped you....

Go to the back of the PSU (my guess), tap the Fan guard firmly. You can then tell if it's that fan or not. Obviously you can do it to any Case fans but not your CPU fan.

14-16 Hours a day, I wish I had as much sleep as you can get, And I'm not joking there. I set up a new company 4 months ago, I have another new shop that should have been open a month ago that I NEED to be open before christmas. I write for two magazines, and I go to college a couple of nights a week. THEN Iv'e got to fit In some quality time with my two kids (unfortunately not living with me). I average 19-20 hours a day, 7 days a week. And YOU think your hard done by.

LIGHTEN UP. Humour is your best defense against tiredness. If you THINK 14 Hours is too much, then it is. I'd love to have a short working day like that. 10 Hours to sleep and play......

Oh! by the way it's Orifice

And you get to the state where you dont give a F*** about the money. If you dont have time to spend it, What use is it?

Unfortunately I dont have any money as it's all being ploughed back into the business's. If they dont make it, I'm homeless, and the 6 employees, including two single parents, both who have handicapped children to support, will be unemployed.

But you've got to laugh, it's much better than crying.
