Weird sound making me go crazy!

Ok well its happening with my current sig rig, when the computer is at idle it emits a very high pitched "EEEEEEEEEEEEE" sound.... Its not very loud but its definitely audible and its really starting to bug me. heres the weird part, if i load up prime95 and start stressing the high pitched sound completely goes away! if i stop the test the noise returns. Even refreshing a web page for the split second the processor is used the noise stops and then resumes after the page is loaded and the PC is back at idle.

I have never had this happen with the 4 other PC's i have had so i am completely lost as to whats causing this. The rig runs perfectly but its just so damn annoying! Any ideas as to what is causing this? dont suggest i just fold to keep the processor loaded 24/7

Capacitor noise I guess
Could also be a capacitor going bad. Any electrical burning type smell?

Try taking the cover off the PC case and listen closely to try to determine exactly where the noise is coming from.

It could also be a fan going bad.

Not at all, the PC is brand new and everything checks out when stressed, i haven't even overclocked it yet.

You can use vacuum hose to pin point the source of the sound.
You just get a piece of 1/4 inch about 3 feet in length and hold one end up to your
here and move the other end around inside your case.
The hose works kinda like a cheap stethoscope

My GTX280 does that when its folding or its playing an intense game, although if its folding it screams for 5 seconds, then breaks for 2... and repeats.

It also screams if I start up a game and I get more than ~300fps... ex. during the loading scenes of old games I get ~3000+ fps and it screams like hell, but once it drops under ~300 it goes away. I'd like to see some of the responses you get from this because I'm quite curious too.

Hmmm, ill have to find my vacuum and try this, i turned all my fans off with my fan controller and i still cant pin point the source.

Well it was still pretty hard to find the actual source of the noise.... I made a red box on the areas that i can hear the noise coming from. Is this a serious problem? besides driving me nuts is the rig in any danger? should i contact gigabyte about an RMA?

Most likely nothing serious, capacitor noise is a common thing - so besides driving you nuts - not something to worry about.

As long as you haven't had any issues, BSODS or anything I don't think contacting Gigabyte for an RMA would help you. Cause most likely there's nothing wrong with the board so they'll just return it to you.

Also, do you have any USB devices connected? If so, try to deconnect them and see if the sound is still there.

The reason you hear it at idle and not stress is because the bus frequency changes when you put it under load, and makes the capacitors vibrate at a different vibe that you can't hear. Sometimes OC'ing actually removes capacitor noise because of the different frequencies.

Yes i have a USB mouse and keyboard and i have already tried disconnecting everything but the high pitched is still there. I have had zero issues with the rig, not a single BSOD or hang since it was built. I might have to try overclocking it to see if that helps things, im just worried because i have no experience overclocking the i7 and i havent seen any foolproof guides.

Yeah, the noise only happens when at idle, if i stress the CPU with prime95 or any other program the noise goes away completely.

Thanks to all who have helped so far

WOOT! i disabled EIST and C1E and the noise stopped! i wanted to keep the power savings enabled to reduce power consumption and heat but not at the cost of my sanity.
You're hearing noisy chokes. From what I was able to find, the sound more than likely is always being produced but you simply don't have the hearing range to notice when the system is at full clock speed. I've personally heard two EX58-UD5's and even the P6T Deluxe I am using now do this. You beat me to it but disabling C1E will take care of the problem.

Sorry Auld but what I meant was automotive vacuum line.
I am a mechanic by trade and sometimes forget others may not be up to speed with the lingo
