My newest computer has an odd habit of just freezing up when:
1)When logging in to Google Talk (the app)
2)When loading DTV on my TV tuner
3)Then shutting down

I think that there is a common windows process that is making all of these happen, probably explorer.exe. Here's a detailed explanation of what happens when my computer freezes:

The application that i am loading keeps showing the working sign (the hourglass without the arrow) an I try to click out into the desktop and make a "select box" (i dont know the actual term for it). The select box doesn't appear after a few tries, and usually on my third click, the mouse freezes while I hear a beep from my case.

I tried reformatting the Hard drive and reinstallin windows, with no success. What do you think it is, and how can I solve it? Would Vista help the problem?

Thanks

Have you OC'd your rig? If so, test it for stability with memtest86 and prime95. If you get errors, back the OC down, and see if you still get the probs your having.

That reminds me of my computer. I have loose SATA cables and my comp randomly starts freezing the mouse and skipping all over the place. Then it restarts or gives me the BSOD. Do you have SATA cables? Check to see if they are tightly placed in the sockets if you do. It's a really annoying and common problem for me.

no, i haven't OC'd my comp yet, although if i can get it stable, i will

And thanks for the SATA tip! i will try that, although i don't understand why it would only happen for certain programs.

Edited after here:

ok, so I tried scanning for viruses, no good (even though I scanned b4)
but i did find:
fqqqa.exe
fqqqm.exe
IPWINS.exe

and what is CLI.exe, apparently i have about 4 of those running...

I tried the SATA, and that doesn't seem to help too much (the processes still freeze)
the good news is though, that the freeze doesn't happen as often
