I agree with the other posts in this thread.

But I'm not sure what good it'll do you? You can't really reinstall Windows from another computer... Windows setup is where it detects all the drivers for that specific computer. Brand new desktop to ancient laptop is unlikely to go smooth.

he can do the install to the point where it copies the files over though, then switch the drive back to the new machine and let the install complete in the laptop.

Hmm... I suppose. Creative, if it works.

It works with Server 03 - I can't believe it won't work with XP also as they're the same under the hood.

Oh, it definitely works in XP - but XP's install can really be mucked up if you so desire. It's possible to install onto a flashdrive, for example.

But since he didn't list the OS, we can only speculate.

Well, he has a laptop with a 160GB IDE drive in it - which makes it too old for Vista and too young for WinME - really XP is the only possibility.

I have seen Vista capable laptops running off PATA drives. Someone I know has a Turion X2 / 4GB DDR2 / Samsung 160GB 2.5" PATA laptop. I think it was an Altec Lansing.

The design decisions of some laptop makers...
