voltage ( or heat ) destroys the "gateways" inside the cpu core, thats what it means for when a cpu is fried.

Exactly. Too much heat can damage a chip, but modern CPUs have good enough saftey measuers to keep that from happening. The easiest way to "fry" a chip is by feeding it too much voltage, which you often won't notice doing damage until it's too late. The is generaly a max "safe" voltage range for CPUs, I'm not too familiar with C2D's, but Wax can probably tell you.

From what I've seen/heard, the max you should run 24/7 is about 1.75 vCore, no matter what the temps, but people will run more for suicide runs and such.

Technical information regarding the ability of the chip to prevent damage to internal components and circuitry.<br><br>
Note: Most of these safety features will be active after approximately 100C for certain to prevent damage to the internal components of the Core 2 Duo processing modules.<br><br>
1. Internal bus system goes offline (certain revisions). Data can still be transferred between internal components using outer bus array.<br><br>
2. Auxiliary components (including secondary FPU cores) will be taken offline, as in lower power mode. This prevents damage to these components.<br><br>
3. Thermal Control 1 will be active. This will prevent full 100% load from occurring by inserting idle cycles into the processor work queue. This will impair performance and will also reduce the thermal conditions inside the processor.<br><br>
4. Thermal Control 2 will be in forced modular mode (certain revisions). This will force a lower multiplier to be used and therefore the voltage requirement will be reduced.

It will explode, turn into a fireball and kill you...<br><br>
Nah that won't happen ofcourse.. The highest safe temps are 60,1C, but it will not throttle untill 85C, so your cpu could get damaged..

I really like the safety features they have on the PCs these days. One day when I was working on my mobo, I accidentally dislodged my heatsink from the CPU (1 of the clip came loose). Fortunately, the PC immediately shutoff after I powered it up. I had set my mobo to shutoff if cpu temp goes past 75 degrees. In the end, my CPU is still working and running strong.<br><br>
Edit: Moral of this story, turn on safety check features on mobo if available.

Just so it's on the record......I would never recomend you run 1.75 unless you have liquid nitrogen.......I would seriously question anyone advising this as a "safe" 24/7 voltage as to how much money they have, because they must like buying CPUs, and doing so often.<br><br>
We'll see how many of these CPUs are still functioning in a year......

There is no concievable scenario that would lead me to 1.75 (that I can think of <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/redface.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Embarrassment"> )<br><br>
I am at 1.41V / 43C-54C @ 25C ambient (+ 9C {+/-} above stock clock). I think that is far as I will take it until I switch to H2O next summer. I certainly wouldn't run it like this during the summer here in California (with no A/C).<br><br>
So far, so good, it's stable....<br><br>
It's all over the place - in the am with an ambient of 22C it's 34C on the core <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Smile"> . In the pm with an ambient of 25-28C it's what is listed above.<br><br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/confused.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Confused"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/confused.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Confused"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/confused.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Confused"> Oh well, it seems okay
