Before he tried it out of curiosity, he told me that he thought it was like Microsoft Outlook (from Office, not the Outlook Express) but really simplified. He said that he was wrong and that Windows Mail was just super lame.
But the useful thing that I learned from him is that Windows Mail is like Outlook in that it can handle the same kind of e-mails - mostly.
I should also mention that Windows Live Essentials is where Windows Mail is now - at least that's the claim.

You can still get it back it's just not installed by default anymore. Go download the Windows Live Essentials package and you can select to install Windows Movie Maker, Windows Mail, Windows Messenger, and a few other things.
