I have a case like this:

What ever happened to these SIMPLE, GOOD cases. Nothing fancy, no windows. Just a spot for a motherboard, few hard drives and that's it!

Why can't there be any simple cases that aren't pure garbage. If I get around to building a PC read: need job, I'd totally throw it in that case!

I would have to do some case modding and a bit of bondo-ing to get front audio and USB connections.

Lian-Li makes simple cases, and they're very high-end, high-quality cases too. Many people prefer Lian-Li cases due to how simple they are in their appearance. Many of them also have a very beautiful, shiny silver interior.

This. Not to mention their LanCool branch off (SSEC Steel versions of Lian Li).

So yes, there are good, simple, high quality cases around. Look a bit harder!

Well your username now makes sense!

Plenty of people I know have simple cases like that, thing is, they can do that because they are still running the P3-P4 that was around when those cases were prevalent. Throw an i7 in a case like that and you're looking at the next Chernobyl (yes I know I'm exagerating). Do they need the gaudy lights? No, but they need to have more then a line of dots across the bottom to let air into them to cool down heat pumping cpus and gpus of todays computer.

Understated yet effective? Lian-Li

Lian Li's are extremely simple, a bit pricey, but very effective. Also some honorable mentions:
Antec 200/300, NZXT Beta Evo, NZXT Whisper.

There are plenty of cheap and simple cases available. Just make sure to fit your case features to your build. I just put together a nice basic computer for my parents with this case:

Which is basically just an update to the basic case design we see in the picture you posted. So to answer your question; The simple cases didn't dissapear, they just got a minor facelift to bring them out of the 90's.
