What is folding

what is folding? i hear it everywhere? what does it do how does it work? whats the point of doing it? what well i agin from doing it?

Basically, it uses your GPU to help understand how proteins fold (or misfold). You don't gain anything from it, besides the satisfaction of helping others (You also get an OCN postbit if you fold for the OCN team!).

There's no reason not to do it. If you're surfing the web already, it's going to use about 30W more power at most, which is less than a light bulb.

apart from the fact that it slows everything up, and can degrade or kill cards. But if you're not at your computer/you run it 24/7 i don't see why not to.

It doesn't slow me down at all... Maybe you should try adjusting the settings if it's making things slow.

The only way it degrades/kills cards is that it uses them. If that's your viewpoint, then playing games also degrades/kills cards.

Does it involve using programs like Rasmol?

You have to download either the gpu2 client or the smp client. The gpu2 is for your graphics card and is much faster than your cpu using the smp. Nvidia cards have the best results with folding but you can still use ati cards if you need to.
