In MW2 when I Forwarded a few ports, I could play with my fellow OCNers! Before it said NAT Type: Strict, but now it says NAT Type: Open. I'm guessing it simply helps connectivity issues.
Need it? Not really
Is it useful? Yes.

Basically a DNS server will help direct you to a website faster.

And OpenDNS has been the fastest for awhile.

I would recommend using it.
You could also try the newly-launched experimental Google Public DNS resolvers...

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Heh, what an easy to remember number... 8888 now, lets see what that transfers to in IPv6.

Wow, people are charging for DNS servers now?

MIT hosts its public DNS server 4.4.4.1 and 4.4.4.2. Running a local DNS server if possable will give you much faster results due to cashing, sence it has a 0ms hop time, you won't loose any loading time, you'll only gain it with common websites you visit..

Which 4.4.4.1 through 4.4.4.8 are very popular, they're also incredibly slow at actually resolving. Google's DNS solution seems to be very good - there are a few things I do not like about OpenDNS, such as the fact that if you mistype as site, you end up on a search page (and I've received many calls for people thinking they have spyware on their computer after I configured their routers with OpenDNS)

For some countries (ex:Turkey) when goverment blocks various sites(Youtube is blocked in our country) we use other dns servers + MITs or googles dns servers are really fast imo they are reducing the response time. just started using them yesterday and as mentioned 8.8.8.8 is an easy ip to remember
