what is the best Nvidia drivers for the 8 series cards on Windows 7 64-bit ?

hello all...

it seems that Nvidia is going back a driver-by-driver, so I think after I have been totally frustrated with its latest WHQL 195.62 driver, I would like to go back and install an older driver, so which one do you recommend me for my card on Windows 7 64-bit ???

best regards

Unfortunately, while a specific driver version might be the best for one person who has 64-bit 7 with the 8 series card, it doesn't necessarily mean you will have the same result. Therefore - and unfortunately - this means you have to experiment.

So, here's what you should do:
  1. Install Driver Sweeper.
  2. Use the Programs and Features control panel to uninstall the NVIDIA display driver.
  3. Reboot into Safe Mode (hold F8 during the transition between the POST and the loading of Windows).
  4. Open Driver Sweepr and select "NVIDIA - Display".
  5. Click "Clean".
  6. Close Driver Sweeper.
  7. Reboot normally.
  8. Install the driver you wish to install.
If you encounter problems with the driver you just installed, then repeat the process above (with the obvious exception of needing to install Driver Sweeper since it would already be installed from the first time). You have to keep doing this until you find one that has the least problems (or one that's problem-free, of course).

I had to do this myself. I ended up with 190.38 even after many people told me that the 190.62 driver would be my best bet. I went through 4 different driver versions until I discovered that 190.38 had no problems.

Fortunately, this is a really easy and painless process.

Have you tried the basic tweaks in NVCP?

Selecting perf setting instead of quality and turning on some optimizations can make your card run much smoother.
Most of the guys on Guru3D are using these:

He did indeed mean the NVIDIA Control Panel. So, here's what we need: post 2 screenshots in order to show all of your current settings. Here's an example of what I mean:

Then scroll down all the way and make another screenshot like this:

To make these screenshots like this so easily without needing to crop them, take the screenshot using Alt+Print Screen. Then open mspaint (click Start, type mspaint, press Enter). Once mspaint is open (Microsoft Paint), resize that blank white area so that it's smaller than what you are about to Paste in. Once you've done that, press Ctrl+V for Paste (or click the big Paste button on the far-left part of the toolbar). Once it's pasted in, do the following exactly as I say:
  1. Press Alt+F
  2. Press V.
  3. Press P.
  4. Select a location to save it to.
  5. Give it a name.
  6. Press Enter, or click Save.
  7. Come back to Overclock.net.
  8. Underneath the Submit Reply and Preview Post buttons, click the Manage Attachments button.
  9. With this, you can upload both attachments directly from your computer.
Then we can look at your current settings and possibly make suggestions as to what settings you should use. You can also go to this TweakGuides article (I linked it starting at page 6 on purpose). It covers everything you need to know in order to enable you to make informed decisions for each setting.

But if you've already done this and if all you're doing is looking for a driver that works better with your particular system, then follow my Driver Sweeper instructions above and try different drivers.

TwoCables, you should look into a program called 'Snagit'. It can do all that in just two clicks. Plus, you can do all kinds of editing and record just about anything on the screen, still and video.

I've been procrastinating making a NVCP tweaking guide for OCN. I need to get on that.

I admit that it sounds pretty cool, but Paint is often more than I need.

well, bellow I have attached 3 pics of my nvidia control panel :

1- the "NVCP" indicates the way I managed the 3d settings, and I have chosen Mirror's Edge as an example, so I just set it following the settings marked with the NVIDIA mark from the drop-down menu. (and I think this is what you were going to tell me to do ?)

-2 the second one shows you my GPU with its default speed.

-3 while the other one shows you the minor changes I have done for this card to achieve some better performance, ( and tell me please if those little changes will cause my crappy PSU to not to feed the other PC peripherals properly and especially the CPU ).

NOTE: I am currently with the 195.62 WHQL driver, so I went back to it again after I tried the 182, and 186, and it seems that the recent one is OK now after I re-installed it .

I think you misunderstood me. Just post exactly what I posted above so that I can see the settings that you're using. Don't copy my settings and then post the screenshot. Just post exactly what I posted, and then we'll go from there.

ok my friend TowCables
here you are :

but unfortunately...
it seems that I couldn't manage with MSPAINT, so I just cropped them

Dude, all you have to do is press Alt+Print Screen to take a screenshot with the active window open, then paste it in to MSpaint. But before you do that, it's a good idea to shrink that white box to something smaller than the window so that you don't have to re-size the white area.

so what about this please are those little changes to the GPU OK or they will cause the PSU to not to feed the other peripherals properly ??? should I revert those settings changes to their default ???

the card games don't stutter nor the card its self acts strangely on the new settings I did, but now I worry about the power, since as you see my PSU is quite poor, and I am anxious about the other peripherals of my PC whether they are fed up with power properly, or the new VGA settings would draw more power that may lead to poor performance for the CPU... RAM...

so what do you think guys ???

I would say that overclocking on a PSU like that is a bad idea. I mean, I just wouldn't trust it at all. But at the same time and with all due respect: I think you're worrying a little too much.

But I should stress that it's a bad idea to overclock anything on a cheap PSU. It could cause the PSU to fail which could mean the death of one or more of your components (or the entire system).

ummmm... well, then I am going to revert changes, and thanks
