what kind of paint?

Hi,

I'm trying to find the perfect color paint for my latest mod, Imolation (see sig). I'm looking for a matte finish somewhere between black and really dark grey. Also I want it to be really really really scratch resistant. That's a huge selling point.

So basically what is the most durable matte black paint I can find and where can I buy it? I have a paint gun that I'm using so it doesn't have to be rattle cans.

Also is there something I can do to the paint to make it more durable?

EDIT - also a guy from a body shop quoted me ~$95-$100 for enough Imola Orange car paint to do my case. Does that sound reasonable? It's a hard to get color and it's a pearl, so you have to factor that in as well.

THanks!

I would use automotive paint. The key is to do light coats not heavy, that will make the paint more durable also using a clear coat will help as well. go to an automotive paint shop to get the paint if you have a spray gun for it.

Here you go not your normal stuff but you asked for something that is durable and this is the most durable coating system on the planet. Designed to be used for rust repair but works fine on clean metal. It is similar to porcelain as far as hardness and is virtually indestructible. I saw a demo at an auto show where the put it on a piece of rusty metal let it dry and then whacked it with a hammer which did nothing to it.

That's some pretty extreme stuff! However I think it's glossy and I was looking for matte. Maybe I'll just do what everyone else said and get regular auto paint and clearcoat it.

It is fine when when sprayed because the reducer/thinner allows it to flow out evenly. And I was referring to the entire series not just the original formula, they now have several versions.
I had forgot about the stuff since I have been out of the auto body field for several years until seeing his post.

Edit: the chassis coat or metal mask is what you are looking for I think. It is listed under single part top coats.

Wow that's exactly what I'm looking for and it seems really durable. Thanks for the help. Do you think I should still clear-coat it or just leave it plain?

i got mine at advance auto but u could probably find it at autozone, orilys, napa or what ever automotive store u have

EDIT btw it took me 3 cans at 8$ a can but could of easily gone 4
If you go with auto base clear and want the satin/matte finish make sure to pick up some flattening agent for the clear.
Look around at that site before making a decision it truly is a remarkable product line.
Are you sure you want something that rough it is the same as rhino liner only not as thick an application. Just wondering if you realize how much texture it has.

That's actually ok. I'm really not going for a solid black look, just a dark matte finish reminiscent of a car interior. So that truck bed paint seems ideal for its durability and color.

even if it dose chip, scratch, peel. all u have to do is just re spray a coat. you dont have to sand and repaint the color and hopefully match the color
Another quick question: A guy from a body shop quoted me ~$95-$100 for enough Imola Orange car paint to do my case. Does that sound reasonable? It's a hard to get color and it's a pearl, so you have to factor that in as well.
if hes prepping the case and all with sandblasting and using primer go for it that's not all that bad.

No that's just the cost of the paint lol. I would have to do the sanding and priming myself! I'm just curious because I have no idea how much automotive paint costs. For my gf's mid-tower case I used about 5-6 cans of Krylon spray paint and then 2 cans of gloss which set me back about $54.

This guy is going to give me the car paint mixed with the pearl and the clear coat as well as the paint thinner+hardener for $100. It's automotive grade so twice as expensive doesn't seem that unreasonable no?

$100 isn't a bad deal, I'd jump on it.
Do you have any stores around you that do powdercoating?
thats not a bad price, you can buy it your self a little cheaper but unless you know how to mix it and have the tools to spray it and know how then i would go for his deal. other than that, thats a nice color when done right.
