What router should I get? (poll)

So, I'm in need of a new router. The I currently have is the Linksys WRT54G. It has served me well for the last couple years but recenly I have been playing some games with friends and it has been lagging pretty bad or just cutting out completely. I think I need a more powerful router. We usually just play on our laptops and we play starcraft and halo, so nothing to CPU/GPU intensive. We usually have 4-5 people playing at my house and another one or two online. I want a router that has gigabit ports so that when I build a new system in the future I can hardwire in. (I sold the system in my sig and currenly only have a laptop until I can build a new system) The other thing I am not sure on is should I go for N or just get a super G, because none of our laptops have N. Would the N router be better any way? Would it provide more bandwith with lots of people playing? I just want something that will play smoothly and not lag. Keep in mind we are all running wirelessly and none of us are hardwired in. I was looking at the Linksys WRT310N, D-Link DIR-655, or Netgear WNR3500. Any recomendations on these or another router I should consider would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not an expert on networking but I've had this router for close to a year and I have never had problems. It's located in the basement and I'm on the second floor and I always have full signal strength. I would recommend it from a newbie's standpoint. I'm sure some of the experts can give you some better recommendations.

His router is only one step down from that one. Also that's alot of money for a G router.........

That router he posted, is probably one of the best routers ever produced from Linksys. (which is a division of Cisco, which is a large network product manufacture for large businesses)

Well he certainly doesn't need the N routers that he posted if he doesn't have an N card. That's like spending money for nothing.
The WRT54G (GS and GL) is a great router. Have you installed third-party firmware on it and overclocked the CPU? The WRT54G has horrible firmware to begin with, but install something like Tomato or DD-WRT will make the router fly, worth a try before you replace it.

If you are not going to need gigabit just yet, stick with your WRT54G and do what I suggested above. (I would be happy to walk you through it)

If you still want to get a new router, don't go N just yet, its not worth it, it's not fully finalized yet so it's a little buggy.

Also no need to buy a super-G router, all the WRT54G's have super-G, it's just disabled, if you install DD-WRT or Tomato you can just enable it, it's called "Afterburner"

Edit: Here's a link to the supported hardware database for DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/dd-wrt/hardware.html) just type in the model name or manufacturer
I have had the Linksys WRT310N (1 year) and Linksys WRT54 (2 years)

and never had a single issue. I would recommend anything liksys makes especially those two routers, and I will probably never buy another brand ever again.
Hell, with those two, if they keep working this well, I may never need to buy another router, until new tech comes out down the road.
Definitely D-Link DIR-655 if you have an N card, but since you don't, I second sav5716's choice.

Shop for a router that can be flashed to different firmware.

I really do like that Netgear personally, but for your situation I would stick with a decent Linksys Router similar to the one posted above. Hope that helps.

I don't know if the OP will know what routers that would be, but you are absolutely right in the fact that flashing a router's firmware can help temendously. For instance, most Linksys routers or when Buffalo was around in the States.

The OP already has a router that could be flashed to another firmware, even most of the WRT54G's after version 4 can be easily flashed to DD-WRT (few extra steps because of the modified bootloader)
