Hello my fellow overclockers.

I stupidly dropped my External Harddrive onto hardwood floor.

Upon turning it on it made a repeating clicking sound as if it were trying to read the harddrive but could not.

I opened it up and took out the harddrive knowing I could somehow plug it into my rig and hopefully it would work and I could save 4+ years worth of data.

Here's the harddrive out of the shell:

Here's the plugs on the back:

I recognize the power port. My PSU has plenty extra power cables hanging out of it right now. What I don't have or know is the widest port on there. What cable do I need to attach that to my mobo? Any product links would be awesome. I'd also need to know where on the mobo it goes...

My current HD has completely ports in the back, they're they thin little strips and are tiny compared to the massive pin style plug on this external HD.

If you've dropped your hard drive, it's toast. You're not getting anything off it by trying to use it.

First off, I'd like to say that I now feel old when it comes to computer parts. Someone asking what a standard HDD cable is just does not compute.

That said, I will confirm that it is an IDE cable with a Molex power. Should plug right into your computer assuming you have that port on your MB (some don't even include it anymore).

You mean you don't have an IDE cable lying around somewhere?

That cable will do it, damn overpriced though, check ebay. I'd say it's always worth a go when you've got that much stuff on it, might get it to work for a little, I've done that before with a dying hard drive. Good luck and all.

Can you help me out with whether:

My Corsair TX850W PSU uses 'Molex' power?
My Asus P6T Mobo would have the port(s) on it for this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/dynamode-ide-cable-60cm-07843278-pdt.html (assuming that is the cord I need)

I know how you feel. There are several things on this site that make me feel that way.

Again for confirmation, that is an IDE cable. If you have the port on the motherboard, and it is a non-manufactured PC, than you should have a cable that came as an accessory.

Yes, your motherboard does have one. It should be red and located at the bottom right corner next to your SATA ports. Your PSU will also, for sure, have molex connections.

This thread made me laugh. I can't believe that with me being 18, there are people who don't know what an IDE connector is or looks like. I would understand if it was scsi or something, but I'm surprised.
Please don't troll other members. It was a legitimate question. Not everyone is an expert.
