I would like to get a subwoofer for my home theater system. I want it mostly for movies, but I also listen to a lot of music. I don't need it to be really loud, but I want it to be very clear. Space is also an issue because currently I have a small room that it is going into.

I want to spend around $300 to $450. I am looking at Polk Audio and Definitive Technology mostly. Maybe Klipsch, but I have never used their products before so I do not know if I would be satisfied with their offerings.

The sub will be paired with a pair of Definitive Technology BP8B tower speakers, a Definitive Technology ProCenter C2 center channel speaker, and a Yamaha RX-465 receiver.

Definitive Technology ProSub 800 $399.00
Polk DSW Pro 400 $450

My girlfriend said she would buy one for me for $400, so I might add some cash myself and get an even nicer unit. Maybe the Super Cube III? This one has insane response from 16Hz-200Hz.

My girlfriend's laptop died this morning......... she dropped it.
So I'm going to have her put the money she was going to give me for the subwoofer toward buying a new laptop so she can get a better laptop.

Oh well.
I am going to keep an eye on Ebay and Craigslist in hopes of finding a great deal.

You should be able to pick up a Paradigm PDR 10 fairly cheap used on ebay, very good sub for the money.

My gf's laptop seems to have resurrected itself by magic. Despite that fact, I went ahead and just won a Polk Audio DSW 600 Subwoofer from Ebay. I got it for $330 plus $40 shipping, and for some reason they charged me $19.80 in sales tax. Since when do they charge sales tax??? It was direct from the Polk Audio store as a refurb with a 2 year warranty.
Altogether I got a $680 subwoofer for $390. I hope it will be here next week.

I don't think I could have gotten a Velodyne or SVS for the price I got this Polk. I am satisfied with it. I did a little testing and as you would imagine, it's a little soft down to 20Hz, but 25Hz and above it does well enough for my needs. 30Hz and above is about as low as most music goes, and that's probably my main use for this.
