What to Serve. (literally)

3106 Views 50 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  the_beast
I am sharing a server with my friend.
We are buying it next week.

What should I host?

Server specs are (site doesn't give any more info than I share)
4x2.83Ghz Xeon Quad's
8Gb of DDR2
and 2x 750GB Hdds (probably 7200rpm)

The bandwidth is 1Gbps (125MB/s)

I plan on running at least:
1 CS:S server
1 DoD:S server
1 Garrys Mod server
1 Vent server
1 Website with forum

I need ideas what else to do with it.

What gamemode are you going to run on the Garry's Mod server?

On topic, maybe a Left 4 Dead or Left 4 Dead 2 server?

tf2 for the win, greatest game ever
why don't you host a bunch of servers and try and sell them to make up the cost? You might run into a few issues with only two hard drives on there, but if you can minimize IO you could definitely host a LOT of servers on there with minimal issues.

Most people dont have the bandwidth but that seems to be a non-issue here.

Just see if you can get a couple high-tickrate, high-playercount servers up and rent them out dirt cheap. Just undercut places like gameservers.com by like 25% and you should be solid.

Definitely need TF2 in the mix. L4D is not good for money because clans don't really care to pay for what is essentially an 8-man server you have little control over...
cod4 should be getting cheap(er) soon where mw2 is out and growing. Just keep it in mind to pick up!

otherwise, tf2 and since I like to be retro, diablo II. So there.

What kind of bandwidth do you have? That's some serious hardware with a serious line, and if it's limited by 1TB\\mo...

You can resell VPS slots on it though, so you can recoop some of your (very) high operating expenses.

Also where is it located (what company).

Holly HELL thats cheap! Are you buying the hardware from them, or just renting rackspace power & bandwidth and building the server yourself?

Ah... You know firstly, OVH only sells to European customers, I believe they don't sell to US (I can't confirm, it's just what I've heard).

Secondly, you still have the setup fee of 80 bucks.

Thirdly, it's only one physical CPU; it's not a quad-socket machine.

Fourthly, they're located in France (datacenter is nearish to Roubiax), and ping's to there are usually 100+ from stateside. That means it's gona be a euro server.
