nVidia's flasgship GTX480 is actually a cut-down version of the original GF100 from 512 cores to 480 because of yield and heat.
There's also 2Gb versoins of 5870.

Other than the 1055T (locked) and 1090T (unlocked multiplier), there's 1035T and 1075T coming out with a quad 960T with turbo mode.

Acually, AMD cancled the the cutdown quad. Native quads only, no "unlocking" this time around.

OP: AMD released the HD5870 about 6 months ahead of the GTX480, so the GTX480 was nvidia's response to the HD5870.
