If you have a router...you only need a few things...
AVG is good<CLAMWIN
Spyware Doctor PWNS!!!
Windows firewall+ClamWIN+the old Jv16 Regcleaner+CCleaner+Comodo...
You won't catch the FLU!!!
That's what I keep on 2 rigs...and they run a bit slower...hell yeah!
The rig with the Comodo...boots in 22 secs...with internet enabled
My wireless accesses the net quicker...BUT THE ZONEALARM IS KILLIN ME!!!
Its all a matter of preference in the end in terms of firewall, Zone Alarm was a pain the first week until it was properly configured, now it does me fine.
Then again I have only tried about 4-5 different firewalls.

ZA does it correct...I use it on 3 PCS that don't do much damage on the net...
I've got a Linux server/softwall that all my connections come through though...
That's a bit advanced ...
But hackers don't fall behind so why should WE?

Norton is the AOL of AV software. Hogs resources, takes over your computer, rarely effective and you have to pay for that kind of suckage.
AVG and Avast! are two good free AV programs.
I myself use Trend Micro, I picked up the full suite from BJ's for 25 bucks, and you get free software updates. So I just got upgraded to the 2007 version from 2006. I think it works the best, because it has real time anti virus security.
I tried pretty much all of them. And I found the Trend Micro to be the best.
My preference is for Kaspersky Anti-Virus personal and for a firewall I use Kaspersky Anti-Hacker. Do not use the combined internet suite version, stick with the two dedicated programs.
Both are easy on system resources once open. The cost online to purchase lic. keys is low and the updates for the anti virus are excellent in thier frequency.
Also the ease of use is excellent with configuration a breeze.
As for freeware I too would suggest AVG.
