What's the best way?

OK, I'm getting a 500GB SATA drive soon. ATM, I have a 120GB IDE used for my OS and programs, and a 250GB SATA for my games and STUFF. I originally was going to format the 500GB, transfer the stuff that I could from the 250GB to the 500GB, and then format the 250GB, splitting in half so I could dual boot Vista and 7. Then, disable my IDE in BIOS, install my OS's and go through the whole update, drivers, programs thing. Then, enable the IDE again, but boot into either the Vista or 7 on the 250GB, and wipe the 120GB, since it will be used in another system I'm making for my mother.

Now I'm pretty sure that is the best way to do it for stability, and such, but it is also the longest way. However, would it be possible to just save a backup of the 120GB drive, and then once the 250GB is formatted and split, restore it onto the partition for Vista? Either way I know I have to do it all for 7, which is why I'm looking for the best way to do it without having any issues.

Thanks!

I'm not aware of any software that will image a drive to a single partition on a multi partitioned drive. I think you'll have to image the drive (120 > 250) and then partition it and install Windows 7. Note that your new drive should come with imaging software (or you can download it from their site).
