That's right. That's designed-behavior.

Your RAID controller has to be able to receive and interpret SMART monitoring information from the drive. Not many hardware controllers will do that. HostRAID / FakeRAID implementations won't have the capabilities.

Yes, it's normal.

Just put a fan in front / underneath your hard-drives if you're concerned about temperatures. A bit of active airflow over the units will drop the temperatures sufficiently.
