When to upgrade?

Since i'm on a crappy non-overclockable Pentium 4, 512mb ram, 200gb HDD and crappy oem stuff, I thought about upgrading it to... :
  • i7 920;
  • GA EX58-UD3R;
  • 6GB CL9T-6GBNQ G.Skill ram;
  • Diamond (Cheapest atm) Radeon HD5770 ;
  • TX650W Corsair PSU; (No additional connectors needed for XFire since 5770 uses only one PCIe)
  • 1TB SATA Caviar Creen HDD;
  • HAF 922 case;
  • New LG random 24x drive that costs <$30.
This will cost me about $1190 on NCIX w/ price match (originally $1350)
So when to upgrade? Today? In December? In January?
And what to upgrade? If something is better than what I just posted..

I'd get a TX750 or maybe even a TX850, they're not much more expensive.
Look up prices on Newegg too and if you're within driving distance to a MicroCenter I'd get the i7 there as I've heard they're selling for around U$200.

750 will do extremely fine with 5000 series...

Edit: no, even 650 will do fine.
You can upgrade later next year when hexCores come out, but don't know how long 920 will stay in the market

Wow, just saw the price difference (I could swear it was less). Get the TX750 IMO.
All I'll say is wait until i7 930 is released. I think it's 32nm, meaning less voltage/heat.

If the i7 930 is going to be released relatively soon, I'd wait for it. If not, get the 920.
If I plan on mild-high gaming, should I go with an i5? I do care about future proofing and the x8/x8 line of the P55s boards are just driving me off, since I plan to crossfire in a late future.
after reading what you are wanting, i recommend an i7 920 setup. you won't be disappointed. plenty of upgrade options down the road and numerous gpu configs. and i don't think you are going to save huge if you buy this setup now or in a month. if you have the money now, why not start enjoying it now?
