Which 8800GT is better?

951 Views 25 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Zap
Hello, I was about to go SLI with my PNY 9600GT, but I was told I don't need dual cards, since my screen is under 19". Is that true, if so, I'm just gonna sell my 9600GT, and upgrade to a higher level card, but is the 8800gt or the 9800gt better? And if so, which brand is better, cuz there is XFX, Nvidia, PNY, and so on... Thanks!

They are all the same reference card. But get XFX or eVGA. eVGA has the 90 step-up (upgrade your card) and XFX has a double lifetime warranty (it can be transferred over to another person, perfect for selling hardware)

And the 9800GT is only better when you get the one that has the actual die-shrink. Majority of 9800GT's being sold are just 8800GT's with a new BIOS.

Thanks both of ya! I'll probaly go with the EVGA, since my new system has the EVGA 790i board, which that'll sell easier... (Which probaly won't happen, but sometimes money talks).

Half a year a bought 600/900 non overclocked 88GT and look what i got.
800/2060 is kinda nice.
So, don't pay more for pre-overclocked cards and get one of BFG, XFX or EVGA.
There all the same.Yeah you get one's that are overclockted but that can be done by anyone and for £100 more in some case's it's just not worth the extra asking price.

So go out and get the cheapest you can find and overclock it.
Well, with that amount of kit under the hood, why are you using such a small screen?!

At any rate, all the 8800GT's are essentially the same. But I'd go for the Asus 9800GT model. They're not typically better than say, a good eVGA model, but support Tri SLI for future reference in case you get a larger screen (with a bigger resolution and then SLI will be good for you)

But, personally, given the hardware in your PC, I'd opt for a HD4870 512mb or a HD4850.

That said, my mate's using one of my 8800GT's on his 19" monitor at the moment and he says it's a marked improvement over his previous X1950.

Has anyone actually tried Tri-SLI on the Asus board with two SLI fingers using unmodded drivers? I don't think it is allowed in drivers.

EVGA 9800GTX+ $189 @ newegg $159 after MIR....

Honestly going from a 9600GT to a 9800GT (8800GT) isnt a huge upgrade...

I would get a 2nd 9600GT and save for a new monitor or if you want a single card upgrade, get the above mentioned 9800GTX+

I wasn't aware you could Tri-Sli any 9800GT. Sure enough the Asus version on newegg seem to have the dual bridge.

Can anyone confirm these cards work in tri-sli mode? The bridge alone is not enough to convince me.

I think its going to be common on all cards now... I have yet to see TRI SLI scaling that impressed me tho... SLI really just took a huge jump with the g92 and 16 X 16 mode tho.....

lol i dont really feel like looking it up but yes i can confirm it.

Certain versions (such as the Asus) will run tri SLI on capable mobo's. That was supposed to be a selling point as its basically an 8800gt revamped to be a bit cooler in some cases where they used the die shrink and some have Tri SLI.

That's not confirmation in my book. I have yet to see anyone use a 9800gt in tri-sli. So please, look it up. I searched and came back empty handed, only people saying it doesn't work as there is no support for it. I only saw one person that attempted it and they said when sli was enabled it used just one card.

Fine: took me about two minutes of google.

Clocked at 650MHz/1GHz, the 9800 GT has one shader cluster less than the other 9800 offerings, meaning 112 shaders. It also adds three-way SLI support - a feature many wished the 8800 GT had...

I didn't see it tri-sli tested, only saying it has the capabilities which is the dual bridge. Still no hard evidence.

P.S. I saw that site plus many more that says it's capable but have yet to see anyone actually get it to work. One guy claimed he emailed ASUS and they returned the email saying it doesn't work.
