Do you prefer to max games out with a noticable FPS hit or lower some settings in order to achieve a fast smooth game?

a fast smooth game for competitve play and for others a noticable FPS hit

competitive as clan matches or tournaments etc.. cause even 5 fps helps for bullet reg or seeing the enemy imo

balanced... highest resolution and features to get MINIMUM 45fps to be fully enjoyable.
As long as it stays stable at at least 30, I'm good, but 60 is awesome too.
If it's a multiplayer game, I'll lower SOME settings to get more FPS. But I never, ever, ever turn off AA. I have to have it.
i like all the eye candy so for me maxed out never ger frames that drop below 30 never
Max settings, and if it isn't playable, I OC until it bleeds.
For fast-paced multiplayer games I would choose FPS over details, at least 70+ for Counter-Strike: Source

Balanced is the best, native resolution+all settings high+ no AA=40FPS in CoD 4
for most games i prefer quality, and will usually get fps between 30-60. Like gta IV, Grid, Fallout3.

However for competitive games like cs 1.5 and cs:s, i need the fps maxxed. in 1.6 i can notice a huge difference between fps_max 60 and fps_max 101. In cs:s anything below ~260 i notice - with 300 being perfect.
Singleplayer: Highest settings for 35fps+ on original display resolution,

multiplayer: Best fps/settings, for example Call of duty 4, 125fps+ on original display resolution

Smooth gameplay.
I want at least 30fps in all situations possible.
This useally requires me to disable some settings like shadow or Texture quality.
I never run AA unless i'm sure my rig is capable of running the game butter smooth on highest settings.

Rpg's make an exception as framrates below 30 dont screw you over that much, but I DO notice it at instant tho.
