I wish to buy an external Hard drive. I think one with 250gb, 7200rpm will be good enough.

When looking on WD and other manufactors websites I see so many different models that have the same specs(Same capacity, same RPM, same buffer, same interface). Yet, their prices are significally different. Why's that?

Mainly this HD will be for everyday use and backup, and especially for movie encoding. Is it good to have an external HD for encoding, or will that significally slow things down?

what i would do if i were you is not buy an external hd.. but buy an external hd case..run ya anywhere from 25-60 bucks and then slap in any internal hd of your choice.. you can pick them up rather cheap.. save yourself some cash and your not out if the drive ever takes a dump..

thank you

Is it as effective?

Can I get it in something like bestbuy? Or anything of the kind?
I can't really order off newegg.

And last question - how will I plug the hd in my pc? using an IDE/SATA to USB cable? will that be as good?

if you are going to by a internal drive you might as well skip buying a external case and just put it in your pc. that will save u a few bucks...then just set it as slave(if IDE)

All that an external HDD is is an internal one in an enclosure. the difference in price between enclosure+internal hdd vs external is what you're paying the manufacturer to plug the HDD in for you.
SATA will give you better speeds than USB by a long shot
