I've been reading a ton of reviews and posts on graphics card in order to make up my mind on what to buy. I will be buying a card/cards in june or early july and i'll have just about $550 the most for this. Should i get a GTX 295 or SLI a 260 or 280 or 285 depending on the prices for each at that time? I will be purchasing an i7 920 with an x58 mb and ddr3 mem also.

Well unless you up the speed of that Q6600 some you will probably bottleneck even a single GTX 260 55nm. Not to mention if you got a 295. I was asking a mod a few days ago, that posted his 295 3DMark Vantage score, whether or not the 4Ghz i7 he was also using in that setup would bottleneck. He said a 295 would bottle neck even an i7 at 4ghz up to 1280x1024 res.

Also unless you are running a huge monitor (I have no idea how big your Envision ECT700g is) even GTX 260's SLI'd would be overkill. Now If your monitor is 25+ inches, then you might need the power.

If I had to recommend one though I'd say go for the GTX 260's SLI'd they will perform amazing.

EDIT: Here is the thread I was talking about http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/4700...ge-scores.html

get the 285. it's the better bang for buck. the 295's price is just so ridiculous.

Hey sorry DJKelly I totally didn't see that you were going i7, but still check out the thread I posted one of the mods just posted scores for his GTX 295 with a 4ghz i7

That should interest you.

I'll be charging everything on my system. I'll buy a new monitor that supports resolutions in the region of 1680 x 1050 to 1920 x 1080 depending on which one i can afford.

I still would say go 260 SLI the 295's SLI'd would bottle neck even an i7 at 4gz (will bottle neck alot less if you run higher than 1280x1024). At those res's though you will need the GTX 260's SLI or at least a single 295,

So will i need to overclock the 260's to beat the 295? Also i wont have more than $150 for a psu and so will the CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W be enough for the sli 260?

I don't know if overclocked 260's SLI'd would beat a 295, it really depends. But if you get two 55nm 260's a 850w should be ample, and they should overclock like demons
. I think you could run 285's SLI'd with the Corsair 850TX, I'm looking at getting that same PSU when and if I go SLI, that is a great PSU.

Also I hear (in several reviews) that an overclocked 55nm GTX 260 keeps up with/outperforms slightly a stock clocked 65nm 280!!

This Acer is a wide screen and high resolution for a 19" -- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009127 -- I've been using it for over a month now, and even though it's not a $400 everything-but-the-kitchen-sink model, it sure beats being hit by a blast furnace as the larger monitors can feel.

It's 1680x1050 native, but can also run at 1920x1080. Anyone can afford THAT monitor! lol

I saw in a review somewhere that sli 260 drops alot in performance compared to the gtx 295 at 1920 x 1080. If thats not the case i will definitely go sli instead of the gtx 295. I guess a sli setup will also beat a 4870 X2 right?

SLI Scaling is not really too great other than the GTX295. Crossfire is a bit better at scaling though. So if you really want to go multi card go with ATI. If you want single wait until late april or early may. New ATI card's coming out that will push the prices down. But Nvidia claims they will not lower prices, their loss I suppose.

If you 100% can not wait here is my reccomendation:
1680x1050: 4850x2 2gb, Gtx 285
1920x1080: 4870x2, Gtx 295
Anything higher go with the 4870x2 anything about 1920x1080 is where the GDDR5 from a 4870x2 really show's its brute strength. Hope I helped!

HMMM, you raise some good questions. I actually think that with the right Overclocked processor that a 295 would outperform the 260's. But I can;'t say for sure. That is what the mod told me though, that at higher than 1280x1024 the 295 would start owning the 260's SLI'd.
