So I take it you have T-Mobile. The G1 is worth it just for Android, it's really superb, tons of apps - free and cost - in Android Marketplace. It also has an awesome browser which can do tabs and multiple windows. The internet is reasonably fast even with just the Edge network (no 3G in my area, something to look into). The phone itself is a bit on the large side, but easy to use and has a very good touch screen.

The Blackberries are nice, but aren't touch screen with the exception of the Storm (Verizon). I was never fond of Blackberry's OS either.

The only other phones to consider are the one with Windows Mobile 6, which I'm not a big fan of. Get to your nearest corporate outlet and try some out.

Oh, well then, you have your choice. Firstly about providers. I have Sprint, which is good, but their network isn't compatible overseas (the rest of the world uses GSM except for Sprint apparently). I believe that AT&T uses GSM but I don't recall what T-Mobile uses.

I have the Samsung Instinct myself. It doesn't have a Wifi card, but it is really small and compact (important to me) and with the Opera Mini browser is lighting fast. It has a rinky-dink 2 MP camera, micro-SD card slot, and a growing collection of apps, free and cost. My GF has the G1 and I play with it more than my Instinct, but I wouldn't have one because of the size.

All the Palm phones out there are very good (I love Palm OS), but they're large and expensive.

HTC has some good phones out there as well, but many use Windows Mobile 6 - the Fuze, Touch Pro, etc.

And of course the iPhone 3G is a great phone, can't beat it really. I would have it if Sprint carried it. And by "target" do you mean being mugged and having your phone jacked? That's a risk I suppose, but any flashy smart phone is a target if you ask me.

What about the Sony Xperia X1. Full touch screen with a qwerty keyboard too and Windows Mobile.
as a tmobile user, i own a tmobile wing and my sister who is on the plan with me, has a new g1.

both are excellent phones. i was playing with her's last night. the g1's screen is very responsive, has a lot of nice features and applications it comes with. the wing on the other hand is outdated tech, but it uses windows mobile 6, which i like more than the g1's OS and the iphone's OS (yeah call me a hyppocrit, running and loving a linux on my comp, bash windows every chance i got, but love the windows mobile OS over the other ones
)

but out of all the phones i've owned, the more they seem to do, the crappier the phone "feature" is. gotta love that, that is what the phone is called on my wing "phone feature" like it is a third party app installed or something.

get yourself something reasonably priced...don't waste your money on flash or useless features.

sprint in my expierence sucks. its roaming all over the place where i live.

i think im sticking with the g1 althought i did like the sony x1 but couldnt find a price or carrier on it.
I didnt really care for the G1, There are many better phones out there. Depending on exactly what you want will help also. For a WM phone, I would recommend a newer unlocked HTC. Check out www.gsmarena.com They have tons of info. I would recommend a carrier that uses the GSM tech. suck as T-mo/att (dont really like em but it works) I believe cricket uses GSM (sim cards) as well. SO with an unlocked phone you should just be able to put in your sim and go.
I do have to say that I love my Storm. The touch screen responds nicely, lots of apps, and LOTS of free apps. The internet on it is very nice with the bigger screen too. There's not much you can't do with it either since it comes with MS word, Powerpoint and Excel. I've never used word or excel, but have used Powerpoint, works perfectly!
I have a newer HTC Touch Pro on Sprint, and hate it. I'd go back to my HTC PPC-6800(Mogul), AKA the tmobile wing. Touch Pro has horrid battery life, and a ton of glitches. I loved my Mogul, until it finally died and they replaced it with a Touch Pro.
there is a samsung omnia i looked at, im not sure if your into switching providers, i thinks its mobile 6 but said something about opera, i dont really know much about it and was hoping to learn more honestly
but its pretty nice looking touch screen 5MP camera its only $99 too(when compared to a dare or something which is 179. i think you need a special plan though which is 29 bucks a month more. has wifi
Look into the HTC Touch Pro

There's tons of hype about the Pre, I have to admit its new OS looks really cool.

I wish the Pre would come out on all four big carriers. I really don't like Sprint's network.

My contract is up in May, and I'm looking at the Omnia on Verizon and the G1 on T-Mobile. AT&T's prices are insane, so I'm really only looking at T-Mo and VZW at this point. Problem is, I like Android on the G1 better than Windows on the Omnia, but the company I work for only gives me discounts on Verizon and Sprint contracts, not T-Mobile.
i say anything HTC

the touch Pro or touch diamond are good choices. so is the touch HD, or the G1. all depends on what you want to do with the phone
i went ahead and bought the g1. upset at the battery lifetime i ordered a 2300mah battery with the fugly back cover....with my old cover i plan on sanding and painting it to see how it comes out.
