Finally its time to move on from my i3 530.

Now i have two options:

Core i7 870
or
Xeon X3450

Now which one should i go for?

What are the advantages of Xeon processors over Desktop processors and other way around?

How good overclockers are Xeon? What kinda clocks should i expect from it and at what voltage? and what should i expect from 870?

Thanks

If gaming is the concern, get an i5 and crank that sucker up to 4.4Ghz.

id go with the 870. the 950 does have more advantages because of the platform, but the 8xx series is way more economical and the difference in performance is negligable. do you plan on going sli with your new setup? if so how many cards in the sli setup? if you plan on just sticking with 1 vga or 2 w/ sli id go with the 8xx, 3 or more sli go with the 9xx

I would say go with the cheaper option. Yes, Xeons are a better binned processor, but you should be able to get good numbers with the 870.

I'm currently working on a 4GHz clock for my Xeon and it looks good so far.

Actually, i already have Maximus III Formula board. All i need to upgrade is processor.
Regarding 950, i was just asking.

I'll be doing GTX460 SLi hopefully next month and i think 8x/8x isn't that bad when compared to 16x/16x.

@AuraNova
Whats your voltage at 4GHz?

oh dude xeon all the way, they are the best cut of the silicon, they overclock like, and just to provide stability int eh long term they bin them much lower than what they can actually do.

You'll be waiting a long time considering the high level chips aren't due out until Q4 2011.

Everyone is waiting on Sandy Bridge because they think it is due out soon, but that is only the mid range chips to replace socket 1156 in Q1 2011. The socket replacing 1366 isn't due out until Q4.

or hey bulldozer >_>
But realistically go for 870, unless you think the price difference is WORTH the slight overclocking/loss in heat. OR go for 1366 platform and i7 950......?

New Xeon & i7 cpu are made using the same architechture.

Xeon has 2 QPI bus(you can run two xeon cpu on a single mobo)
i7 has 1 QPI bus(you can run one i7 cpu on a single mobo)

xeon is a server cpu,
i7 is a desktop cpu,

so if you plan for gaming,i7 is the way to go(xeon cpu are more expensive than i7)
so buy i7

i7 950 is faster than i7 870

hope you like my reply
