Alright guys. I just got a REALLY nice reciever / amplifier. Pioneer VSX-504S. It pushes 135w RMS @ 8ohms, 285w RMS @ 4ohms, 350w @ 2ohms per channel. Its also bridgeable, even at 2ohms (I've tested).

Now, I've also got a vintage set of Pioneer 12" speakers to go with it. I'm going to build a Rockford HE2 subwoofer into the subwoofer for it. Now I need some bookshelf speakers.

So, here's the plan. I'm going to setup the 12's to the left and right of my TV (on the "A" channel). I'm going to have a set of bookshelf speakers setup on my desk on the "B" channel, to be used as PC speakers.

So what bookshelf speakers would you guys recommend for some nice SQ? Keep it on a lowish budget (under $200).

I was thinking about these Polk Audio's as I've heard them in Best Buy, and they sound pretty good. Any other recommendations?

I have always liked Polk Audio products. I had their speakers in my old car and really enjoyed them until I sold the car to a friend of mine.

I have listened to those speakers in Best Buy as well and I enjoyed them.

I just bought a re certified Polk Audio DSW Pro 600 sub woofer on Ebay. I am hoping it will be as nice as their other stuff.

I would do the same, but I prefer building my subwoofers myself, lol. I did really enjoy the way those 5 1/4" speakers sounded though.

My cousin is an audiophile who just happens to have a similar receiver and 5.1 surround with Polk speakers. I know he would highly recommend those!

Other speakers to consider would be Klipsch speakers.

Yeah, I'm not even going 5.1 because this reciever only does 4.1 (Dolby Prologic). So I'm saying the hell with it, just going for a really good set of 2.1. But with 2 different sets of fronts, lol.

Maybe outside your budget, but I have a set of Klipsch B3 bookshelfs, and there awesome. Tested with tones to be able to reproduce 50hz, although had to crank them to hear that low. 55hz and up there outstanding. Crisp clear excellent highs also.

Yeah, I checked at Best Buy, and the cheapest Klipsch were $300 and up. That's over budget, I honestly don't want to spend over $100 for a pair, but I MIGHT be able to stretch up to $200 if its worth it.

I just fixed up some old kenwoods with new tweeters and refoamed the woofer and they sound pretty darn good....I dont have anything other than my other stuff to compare to, but I like em.

If your willing to work, craigslist a lot of the time has old speakers that just need a little tlc that you can pick up for cheap.

I'm tempted to put up a wanted thread here. But most of the people here have PC speakers, or stuff that I can't afford, lol.

There's also a set of Polk Audio bookshelfs at Best Buy for $104.99 for the pair, but I didn't listen to those.

I'm TRYING to cut back the cost as much as I can.

I spent about 100 restoring mine but that was partially cause I repainted and got new trim and stuff thats not required. They woulda cost me about 65 total for just the speakers (no aesthetics).

I would first recommend you get a dedicated subwoofer amp, Parts express has some nice ones. They will have a built in crossover and by using the .1 pre-out you'll be able to get the .1 channel in movies.

For cheapish monitors I'd get TCA WAF-1's or av123 ELT525M's

Oh of course. I believe there was a good 500w subwoofer amp on there at one point, that's probably what I'll use.

I would start trolling the local Goodwill and Salvation Army, you'd be surprised what you can find there. I have bought my current speakers, Cerwin-Vega VS-80's, Some Marantz speakers (manufactuerd by PSB) and some Boston MD5's. The most I paid for any of the sets was $25.
