Recently, and I mean for the past 3-4 months, I've been enjoying the sound from the desktop, which consists of an omega striker and rp 21 headphones. The sharpness, clarity, and wide soundstage hooked me. Now, whenever I listen to my iphone, the sound just seems subpar. The mids and lows are OK, but the highs are lacking. I can't can't hear the clash of the cymbals as distinctly in the iphone even if I use the rp 21s with it. Yes, I've tried using a fiio amp and played with the equalizer settings, and it doesn't improve anything. Is there anything to remedy this? Or should I just listen to crappy quality music for 3-4 months so my ears can re-adjust? haha

edit: by mobile chips, i referring to the iphone and the one in my laptop

Probably because the vast majority of people who buy this sort of thing haven't heard any better. No use them putting in an extremely good chip when they can skimp out on it and their customers be none the wiser.

All it would really do is drive up the cost anyway, probably quite substantially.

Without even bothering to read your post, the answer to the question asked in the title is simple - They sound crappy because they ARE crappy.

Want better sound on your laptop? Get an external USB card/DAC.

Want better sound when you're on the go? Get a PMP that is designed for music, not apps.

Still doesn't mean the hardware that's behind it is much better. I can say that Apple supports ALAC but that doesn't mean it's going to sound as good as a high quality PMP, which is a dying breed.
