I have an Oldish X1950XTX. I've got a 22" monitor that was given to me, to replace my 17" one.

On the 17" that supported 1200x1080, i lagged, i had constant crashes and illegal operations.

The 22" has no problems, i'm playing at 1600x1200, my framerates are barely affected, i have reasonable lag, but that's the card showing it's age, and i've not had an 'illegal operation' that were so common with the other monitor.

What's up with this? Is it the resolution has made my graphics card more stable? Can anyone shed some light on this, because i don't know whether it would be the monitor, drivers, graphics card or another hardware/software issue?

your card probably wasn't utilized properly for games you play
the higher resolution the more graphic card works
it could have been that it wasn't necessary for it to work
i too have seen this for example when i was playing cod4 on my old pc
when i switched to bigger resolution it looked more fluent and smoother to play

Your older monitor may have been causing a driver issue, or...? It's certainly not due to the resolution change alone.
