Why is Firefox so great?

2190 Views 67 Replies 50 Participants Last post by  KingOfSparetime
As the title says, why? I always hear that it's better than any other browser, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out why.

Any help?

EDIT: In other words, convince me to switch away from Safari on Mac OS X and Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 on Windows.

Safari crashes a lot, and Internet Explorer is a scourge on web developers. The fact that's it's >3x faster on just about everything is simply a bonus.
It's not that great. The only thing that separates it from the others (as far as I'm concerned) are the add-ons.
I ran benches on Firefox and IE not to long ago (just had to format my HD) - anyways I lost the results but I recall Firefox was out on top (some marginal, some huge) for most aspects that I tested.
I've used it 3 years, simple as that.

What I'm used to and the add-ons are fantastic.

Adblock Plus and NoScript to be precise.

If you were a cat on my desk, I would hiss at you to stall you until my hand came around to swat you off..

Firefox has its pros and cons ..so does internet explorer thats I just have both of them install in my computer so I cant complain =P
Hm, I don't work for Mozilla, so no desire to convince anyone. Little research is all you need for this one.

Firefox is a lot more secure and safer to use than Internet Explorer. Research it a little

Also, Firefox is so much easier to use that internet explorer. Better add ons. I really dislike using internet explorer, is so basic.
Firefox is definitely more user friendly imop

To be honest, I don't really care what browser you use, just as long as it isn't IE, for the above reason.

No cat who hisses at me shall live. Just kidding, kitties love me.

The ones that are alive.

Anywho.

In general the speed between them is about the same. Yeah, if you run some synthetic benchmarks it's going to come out as faster. But that's usually for formats you ever encounter online anyhow.

It's just like synthetic benchmarks for anything else.

Personal preference of course. I use Firefox only because I'm most familiar with the layout. Only reason I don't care for IE is because the placement of the 'stop' button is stupid. Opera was fine. Safari...I don't think I've touched in years because every Mac I've used has always had Firefox on it too.

Honestly if you're happy with Safari there is really no reason to switch to any thing else. But at least it's free, so I mean you could always just try stuff out for a week and switch back if you don't like it.

I can tell it is a lot faster, especially it's ability to preload stuff. The App of Fasterfox is great! Also, you can modify the pipe lining and data transfer to get even faster speeds. It's interesting that my modded internet is a noticeable difference faster than the rest of the guys on my floor

I used to use Firefox. It's great. As a lot of people here said, it is MUCH faster than IE. Although, my new favorite is Google Chrome. It is still in BETA (Version 0.3), so there are bugs, but I don't know, there's something about that incognito mode that is just so hard to resist, if you catch my drift

I have used IE and Netscape and neither compared to Firefox. IE seems like it runs with a 50-pound weight attached to every packet. Netscape just didn't do it for me.

I can't really comment on Opera or Safari, though a buddy of mine love Safari. He said he uses it to help design web pages. He said something about pages looking better or crisper or something in Safari. As for performance, I can't really make any remarks.

But as far as Firefox is concerned, I can't complain. It's quick and I rarely run into problems with it. If your browser of choice is IE, I'm led to believe you're a masochist on some level.
Like others have said: addons (add block plus in particular), compatibility; for speed I'd pick Chrome from google.
1. Chrome
2. Firefox3
3. Safari
3. Opera 9.5
4. Internet Explorer
Its not. FF is the fanboy club of the decade. It is cool to bash IE.

IE does everything I need (and about what, 85-90% of the rest of the world). I have tried FF multiple times, and just never liked it.
The only other browser I use is Opera USB, since my work will not update from IE6 and it is very convienient to carry around "my" browser. Opera also works in Linux.
If I was going to convince you to use another browser, it would be Opera, not FF.

I keep hearing about how FF has add ons, well, I have nothing I need added on. Speed, IE is fine for me. Ad blocks, ads don't bother me.

Never used Safari, so no comment on that. Same for Chrome. I don't like being a Beta tester.
it's nice when people explain why it's safer and more secure.

otherwise it's like mccain saying he's going to fix the economy but won't say how.
