Hey, I set up this rig a few days ago... (rig #2 in my profile) and I just took it and hooked it up to my TV. I used an S-video cable out the back of my 6600GT to the input on my TV. The picture is fine when the computer POSTs and even if I enter the BIOS... it's all good until windows boots. then everything is fuzzy. I've tried different resolutions and refresh rates, but I can't seem to get it to work. I've tried to have the TV as the primary display and the monitor as primary. I've tried to have only the TV and nothing seems to work.

HELP!?!?

TVs have a standard frame size of 320x240 so the best you can do when you're in windows is 640x480. It's great for videos and games but not normal text-based applications. I'm sure you can find a PCI card that would give you a lower resolution but you'll probably just have to deal with it being fuzzy

Actually, a SDTV (Basic cheap-o TV) has a fixed resolution of 640x480, check my FAQ.

hmm... well I tried 640x480 and it doesn't seem much better...I'm restarting to see if that helps.

I'm really kicking myself fornot getting a HDTV a few months ago... I wanted to get a 26" HDTV and my wife was like no, we only have regular cable and yeah... really kicking msyelf for giving in cause now I don't have any money to get HDTV

A couple questions... If I do get a HDTV will I get a clear picture? (no promises here... I'd have to find someone to buy my TV before I could even think about it)
And what are some specific things to look at in an HDTV? like is it best to spend the extra money to get one with a tuner, or are they just as good w/o a tuner. (I'll have a HDTV tuner card in the computer) What type of inputs should I look for etc.?
And what is the deal w/ the digital broadcast? I saw something about that last night when i was looking... Is that the over the air HDTV, or is it something different?

TV's are interlaced. that usually makes it look jumpy.

well I realize that a tv probably won't have near as good a picture as a monitor, but if I get a TV that is capable of displaying a HD image... it'll have a resolution that Windows supports and thus won't it look clear? I'd like to be able to use the TV as a monitor most of the time... to be able to browse internet and even use word. Granted the main use of the computer will be for multimedia purposes, but I want it to be clear enough that looking at the screen doesn't strain your eyes just to pull up a music play list or some pictures... or set it up to record a show.

bump... so if I buy a TV that is capable of displaying HD then it should work? or do I need to get a tv that specifically has vga or dvi inputs for it to do what I want?

If you get an HDTV the standard Windows home screen will look much better since HDTV's run at a much higher resolution than Tube TV's...for instance my new 27" LCD has a native resolution of 1280x720 (or 1360x780 forced), which will get knocked down for analog and digital cable but focus back in while watching HD....smae goes with using it as the monitor, you run the comptuer to the new HDTV and the resolution will be what the Graphics card is set at (up to the native res)

Thats the predicament with HTPC, if you want t orun one you need to have a TV that can display a picture like a monitor or it's pretty much worthless but you can't effectively run and record high digital channels or HD-Channels through a cable converter that your cable company gives you. So it's real usage is for your office that gets the regular Analog signal

Try to convince your wife to get the monitor/TV I got, it was $770 w/ shipping fromthe Egg and I think both shipping and price dropped $5 for it's $760, not sure what your budget is like but I'm getting mine today and will let you know how it works

Make sure if you're looking at any HDTV that it has either DVI or HDMI inputs, even YPrPb but make sure of DVI if you are connected it from your computer...i'm pretty sure they sell DVI-HDMI cables

do you know how much it is regularly since it's on a 1 day sale?

and idk... I could get a slim 30" crt by samsung for that price... but it doesn't have dvi or vga inputs... i'm torn
whatever I get I have to have a way to not pay right away
