For ACHI in Vista try this:

Then enable ACHI for your SATA controller in BIOS and boot-in. Vista will then install the drivers and you'll have to restart.
I haven't really seen a performance difference, on my PC's but ACHI is supposed to be better for plug-in play eSATA etc.
