Why no Blu-Ray games?

Why are there not any blu-ray games for the pc?

Seems like a perfect way for game companies to sell higher priced games. I know a lot of people don't have a player, but they are getting cheaper everyday and the high end gamers playing at the highest resolutions would certainly love the higher bit rate audio and what not...

You wouldn't get any better quality from a Bluray game than you would a regular DVD game since all the same files would be installed anyways. The only thing a Bluray game would mean is less discs.

Lol no i dont think so. 1. way to expensive hardly anyone has blu-ray in thier pc. @. Some companies still use CD let alone DVD so we won't be seeing it for a while. 3. we now have this thing called digital downloads so no i highly doubt blu-ray is coming to the pc. Let the confails get it.

Only reason why movies use Blu-Ray is to cut back on compression to improve quality.
No reason for games, you only need a certain amount of space.

I can probably see huge MMO releases using them but that's pretty much it.

No point, most games easily fit on 1 DVD.

Yup, one or two 8gb dual-layer DVD disc(s) are more than enough for most games.

How many people do you know that have a Blu-ray player in their PC.... probably not even 1% of the market... not gonna sell many games.

Thanks for the responses...

I guess thinking about the ps3's use of blu-ray and that now the 360 and ps3 are capable of installing games on the hard-drive it makes little sense to have a blu-ray game drive. My intention though wasn't a fanboy argument, but I was really trying to think of any benefits of going blu-ray would be to a pc gamer.

I wonder if any pc game producers have decided not to use multiple dvd's in order to save money. Are there any instances where they have and it has hurt the final product?

I guess hell boy 101 is right and digital downloads are the future so there will never be blu-ray games for the pc. This begs the question of whether Microsoft is going to go that route with the next x-box. No drive at all, but just downloads for the newer games, unless of course they have a legacy dvd drive...

edit: + rep to all and to all a good year!!!
There is no need for Blu-Ray discs, using most forms of loss-less compression I'm willing to bet any stupid PS3 exclusive would fit on one too. Not to mention how much it would improve the load times...

That said, Blu-Ray has such a low market share, releasing a game on Blu-Ray would be a sure fire way to lose a lot of money.

Games =! Movies....... Games fit perfectly on 1 DVD, and in worse cases (oh no) 2 DVDs... That you install.. and don't need to swap discs.

There is absolutely no need for blu-ray games and I can't see blu-ray games for atleast 2 more years..

Why on earth waste materials that are not needed? Its like taking a music CD and throwing it on a DVD. Totally unneeded.

On top of that to throw games on blu-rays that would use 2 DVDs would raise the game price by atleast $10.

There will probably never be any PC games on blu-ray. I mean ever! By the time blu-ray has a chance to capture the market like DVD has, we will be looking at a new format. Blu-ray beat out HD-DVD, but it has a long way before it can capture what DVD already owns.

Well... there are DVD-Audio which provides better sound quality.

However, the rest of the points still stand though.

I really don't see the need for a new format for some time.

Sure.. if 1440p videos come out.. i'm pretty sure theyll still be on blu-ray. They are capable of going alot bigger than 50GB.

I think blu-ray will be mainstream in 2 years or so... and will probably last about as long as DVD.

1440p is overkill for home users anyway, Unless you have a 52" TV its pretty hard to even tell a diff between 720p and 1080p. 1440p would be huge and would likely require a 65" TV to even tell a diff between it and 1080p.

I can't really see consumers going from 1080p to 1440p. Audio and Video are so good at 1080p and 24-bit/44.4khz that the human eye/hear can't really see better.

Lol damnit.. I knew someone was gonna mention DVD-Audio.. I almost added another sentence before I posted to say "Minus DVD-Audio which is insanely high quality audio".

I was talking about taking normal CDs that run at 1440KBPS or so and throwing them onto a DVD. Pointless

The fact is.. games don't need insanely high audio quality... Most people can't tell the difference, and alot of people wouldn't care. Most humans can't hear past CD quality (Actually I know people that cant even hear the diff between 192KBPS and 1440KBPS)... or don't have the correct setup to hear the difference. Theres just not enough people that would want insanely high quality audio for computer games... not to mention the processing power to play them during the game.

Can you imagine 50GB installs at the moment?!

Persoanlly, I doubt BluRay will last nearly as long as DVD (15+ years). In 10 years from now, I hope that downloadable/streaming media will dominate.

It would be nice but it would require a much faster internet than what the USA currently offers (Can you imagine downloading 1440p movies with 24bit/196khz sound? Your looking at 120GB or so per movie.
). Japan will probably go that route soon since their internet is so fast. In 10 years hopefully the USA has fiber up everywhere and can offer it for cheap.

Bluray may find a niche in PC gaming someday as games grow larger and larger. Digital distribution is fine and dandy but imagine having to download a 25GB game over current broadband providers. Not to mention the space it takes up on a HDD.

It's not practical now only because of prices.
The only possible use I can think of for a Blu-Ray game would be if it had alot of movies, and they were all HD. I'm talking about those old school games where it was more like an interactive movie than a game...you'd take a step, a video would play, you'd pick something up, another video would play...that sort of thing. With that said though, those games went out of style about 10 years ago. The biggest game folder I have on my PC is the Steam version of The Witcher Enhanced Edition. It takes up about 15 gigs and includes 2 full length music CD's and 21 "making of" videos, a few manuals in PDF format, and a billion other extra features. Even then, the whole thing could fit on a couple of dual layer DVD's.

Edit: Just thought I'd mention this since downloadable games have been brought up. I bought The Witcher on Steam, and downloaded it on a 1 meg connection. It took a little over a day (I played Bioshock while I waited) but I don't think it would be a problem on a faster connection. I'm in the sticks and 1 meg is the fastest I can get. I have to pay $50/month for that

BluRay requires 4.2MB/s or 33.6Mbps.

One can dream that US infrastructure will be that developed in 10 years. Then again, most people are satisfied with "good-enough" quality (i.e. slow BluRay adoption rate, slow HDTV rollout, YouTube video quality). Most people would probably be ok with 10Mbps video/audio quality.

Blu ray would be cool for durability -

Its pretty pointless now though, what with the small amount of people with a player and digital downloads.
