PS2 is out-selling the Xbox360 mainly because of the prices..
Wouldn't that be the same situation with the PS3, considering it's WAY more than the Xbox360 .. the PS2's sell for just over 100$

Trippen Out: I agree it will take awhile but I don't think M$ will release a new console so soon, considering how expensive they're getting. I know back in the day consoles cost a lot also, but compared to today's computers its getting insane.

for price/performance a console is the way to go if your just a gamer.. but i dont expect sony to catch 360 till late 2k9 or early 2k10 but then a new console will be on the horizon

The article has completely neglected the impact that the Nintendo Wii would make in Japan. However, North American journalists tend to be shortsighted nowadays anyways, especially concerning international matters. I could rebut every single one of those points in detail, but I won't and will elaborate later if I feel like doing so ...

Brand - Yea, but at that price tag and availability, niche market, best case...

MS Screwed Up - They got North America, and starting to get Japan... (again availability kicks Sony in it's ass here)

Japan Ripe for wha...? - With 80,000 units at launch and less than 4 million worldwide by the end of the calendar year? You can't "take" anything without selling something.

Blu-ray - I dunno man, we gave some devs a full DVD, and they still couldn't make a "good" game, not a pretty game, a "good" game... bluray is just another format... it won't matter that much.

Free Online - XBOX Live is well developed, Sony's is unproven, Nintendos too by the way, but they are all essentially free... disproving his own points...

In a nutshell, I could expand on those but I won't since I'm tired...

Point to be taken from this: don't predict futures if you're not an analyst, and even then, don't predict something that has this many variables involved without taking them ALL into account.

This is an interesting point... I expect with the launch of CPU/GPU hybrids from Intel/AMD and possibly nVidia supposedly debuting in 2008 this very well could be the end of the console as we know it.

If you can integrate more components you will ultimately drive down the cost of the PC. Currently a PC with enough goods to spit out current-gen console quality games costs just over a grand, or 2-3 times the price of a console. With GPU integration these two may come close enough that proprietary hardware is no longer a valuable alternative to a fully functioned PC.

i disagree.. this has been said for years and years now.. oh this new revolution will make the pc gaming obsolete.. or vice versa.. this new vid card will make consoles a thing of the past.. the experiances one has on pc games and console games are to differnt.. i myself would rather play on a console even if i have the same game on the pc.. and im sure you will find others like that as well..

Exactly right. The average family does not have the kind of money to just toss $400 bucks and $60 per game at what, in their mind, is just a toy for junior to play with. A $129 PS2 with $40 games, however, is much more affordable. This is basic economics.

He also ignores the PS3's achilles heel, it's ridiculous $600 price. Look, I'm fairly well off and could afford it without even blinking; but I simply will not spend that much money on a PS3, it's absolute nonsense. Now go back to the average family. The PS2 is going to outsell the PS3 for a long time for the very same price rationale.

That author kind of seems like an idiot, or at least strongly biased for not including this (and other) obvious possible reasons for some of the things he noted. He's also gullible for thinking that Blu-Ray means diddly squat for gaming. We've beaten this horse to death long ago, proven with real data (not Sony's unsubstantiated hype) that we're still not harnessing the capacity of a DVD-9, much less pushing into a need for BD or HD-DVD capacities.

The only thing I do agree with him on is the online play. Giving it away for free > a $50 annual fee. Even if MS Live is better, as long as Sony's is "good enough", free will win people over. Again, with the average family, cost is much more of a driver than quality. (Thus VHS beats Betamax, and Wal-Mart takes over the world.)

My personal opinion, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Wii dominates this Xmas. It's price point is amazing, and it has unique features that will "wow" that average family. Being able to download NES and SNES games for $5 a pop appeals to the old schoolers who are buying these things for their kids...yeah, I can definitely see it being a surprise hit.

The Wii I think will do the best, just because it is cheaper, as a new gameplay type, and nintendo has always appealed to the younger kids. So all they will say is I want a Wii for christmas, and parents are more likely to get them one of those, instead of a $500-600 or more PS3. Plus depending on what games the kids play and active they have to be, the parents could see it as them getting some (minor) exercise.
PS3 in my opinion is gonna bomb. Not enough being sold at launch, and just to much hype for it.
The xbox 360, can also appeal to the people who want to have a home media center, since the 360 can be used for that. So far there as only been 1 game that I have seen that I want to play that will be on the PS3, but 1 game is not worth having a PS3, not till a huge price drop.

just remember everytime you buy a ps3 you are sending sony into more debt :F (they are selling it cheaper than they pay for it to be made (never thought that would happen in japan, nevertheless SONY MUST DIEEE).

Yeah... it really is expensive, and I really DON'T think that Blu-Ray is off to a good start....

Samsungs rediculously priced BD player, image quality issues off the bat... Toshibas Player, though it had its issues, was relatively inexpensive... and they have a great promo for the holiday season (buy HD player, get 3 HDDVDs free).

Dunno.... I like my Xbox 360. PS3 will be good too though.

The PRICE is the problem. I'm well off and could never afford that (In Canada I guess the price will be close to 700 bucks.)

Then you have to buy some games and stuff... we're looking at nearly 1k for the setup.

How many kids get 1k$ CDN for christmas?

It's simple: Get a Wii AND a 360 for the price of a single overly-expensive PS3.

I'm getting the Wii now and the 360 next year, when the price has dropped. Free online play is a BIG plus. Sony charges you to buy it, look at it, play it, and just about anything else you want to do with it.

Any one ever play Everquest? Sony is the biggest group of moneygrubbing w****s out there. After playing EQ for a couple of years, I regretted the moneysink soooo much. I feel like the PS3 will be the same thing.
