If someone can tell me in not smart guy terms of the benefits of this SSD craze I will justify buying one because I like most of us here I gotta have the next new big thing to build the Conan of destroyer of gaming rigs...I'm coming from currently using velociraptor 150gb and 300gb 10000rpm hdd. Newegg seems to be going in and out of stock with new vertex 3 by ocz... Seems to be the best...but why from a gamers point of view..just would like to get clear on this new future of storage drives. Thanks guys

I still load my games from my 2tb 5400 rpm green drive. However, windows and all my commonly used applications are on a 60gb agility 2. The responsiveness is unparalleled. For games all it really does is decrease load times. I put WoW on it since I'm always moving between zones and whatnot.

Well what everybody mentioned so far.

The random reads will be best and the low seeek time.

I just set my ssd's in raid 0 today and the speed is crazy compared to my mech drive raid 0 setup.

TRIM is only need for SSD, not mechniacal drives.

Improve random access time what makes is nice for loading applications/games/OS/etc.

Once you use an SSD as a boot drive you will never go back to a spinner. (for a boot drive)

It is pretty crazy how fast I can load my OS now and my vertex 2 isn't even the best SSD out there.

I don't think getting a larger ssd for games is worth it to much though. I am running a intel x25-v I got on sale for games and while it does load quicker in most of my games (SC2,CIV5,Shogun2) it may load 10 seconds or so faster then the next guy but I still have to wait for them to load too so I don't think it improves performance as much as an OS ssd does.

hay guyz i trim my HDD for lulz! teh bestest

TRIM is for SSD because the NAND has three states... 1, 0 or null. 0 is unoccupied space(by a file), but the controller still sees it as space taken up. It's taking up a virtual bit that represents 0. TRIM resets it to null so the controller will reuse that space in new write operations.

On a side not I thought SSDs were all hype until I did a build for a friend with a 120gb sandforce 1200. LIGHTNING fast.

I know, Maybe it didin't seem like it but I wasn't comparing ssd's and mech drives, merely stating the features. Not all ssd's have trim though.

You won't notice the difference in usage.

I think depends on the size of you SSD if it matters for most people. I for one won't put any games anything lower than 120GB and quickly found out how much Steam (games) is just hungry on 120GB Agility 2. Load times is variable in my opinion depending on game and game mode. Certainly would agree the benefit of a OS SSD has much more of an impact than apps/gaming does.
