Why the hell does my i7 D0 run so hot!?

At 3.6GHZ, my i7 at 100% load runs at 72C, and when at stock under-volted it hits 52C 100% Load..This is w/ a Corsair H50 Water cooler. I have remounted the cooler 5 times, and every time I get the same result.

Those temps are not out of the ordinary for that setup. Search around and you will see a lot of people are sitting almost exactly where you are with the same setup. H50 is about as good as a high end air cooler.

See this thread... ...oh wait it is yours asking the same question.

try this one.

I take it you upgraded from a S775 and got used to those temps?
Don't worry i7's are supposed to run hot.

The H50 isn't better than any quality air cooler and may be worse on an i7, I'd say those were good temps TBH
Hmm... guess there is other factors like ambient temp and air circulation.

My i7 920 D0 runs at 4Ghz (1.25v) Idle 35-40, Load 70-75.

Using a megahalems

Every review i've seen the h50 and megahalems trade blows.

One guy on here even ditched his megahalem for the h50 after he reviewed them both.

On an i7? I have seen it trade blows with the TRUE but that was on an E8500, the i7 once overclocked is generating 30% to 50% more heat, plus the H50 is only a single 120mm radiator and a cheap waterblock.

Don't worry the i7 seems to overpower most of those "self-contained" watercooling kits.

Try modding the H50 with a better fan

As other have said, those temps seem about right for your CPU and cooling.
my liquid cooling is just like the h50 and i too get those same temps. these chips run hot.

Did, didn't improve much, maybe 1C or so.

honestly those temps are fine... if you want decent temps, you have to hand down the money and throw some real water on that thing.

the i7 is by far not a cool running cpu, especially oc'd, i m leaving mine at 3.0 just because i dont need more then that. i was at 4.0 with my watercooling system and had a max temp in the low 60's but that watercooling setup was 250 and the h50 was 65
i think its a pretty nice alternative to those huge and ugly heatsink fans and pricy watercooling setups xD

temps at the moment are approx (as i have the rig down due to missing gpu at the moment)

42 idle / 58 max (prime 2 hrs hot ambient)

I wouldn't worry.
Even on high end wate these things get hot.
@ 4.3ghz, 360rad, 655vario, Heatkiller 3.0 LT I hit 62C @ 1.28V

Trade as in, EQUAL to and not better.

A Megahalem would not trade blows with a custom built loop, it would get it's ass handed to it!!

Lol "Alienware approved". I don't think so man, the H50 is a much better cooler.

I was helping a friend build a system about a month ago...we also used the H50. At first we had the rad mounted inside the case blowing air out the back of the rear. I was feeling the airflow and noticed it was kinda warm. Temps were not that great.

We switched the fan so it sucks cool air into the case. Temps dropped about 7-9c by just reversing the fan direction. It was blowing warm case air through the rad.

Might be something to consider also.

Lol. not really.
They both use the same high density aluminum radiator and low flow pump and crappy blocks w/ 1/4" lines.
The only real difference is that the pumps are mounded differently.
There are alot of these popping up the last few months with the same basic components.

I imagine temps are within 3C-4C between all of them with the same fan.

I was just computer builder/gamer when they coreI7 came out. I tried out liquid cooling. First it was the self sealed system Coolit Domino much like the Corsair 50. It ran too hot for myself. So I decided to build full liquid cool and now ultra happy with the build.

if the h50 is so much better, then the h50 isn't great. i am getting the same temps the OP is.

ps, i can take all the ragging anyone can dish out about my alienware. i still love it!

M3T4LM4N222,is that the stock volts for your cpu?
Core i7 920 D0 2.66GHZ, 0.960v
if so then this chip will run considerably hotter being such
a low vid chip than say a 920 that needs 1.19v-1.21v at
stock settings.
